hey man,

did you say you worked for air canada?

i might be going to japan next summer and i'm thinking about buying a load of parts and bringing them back here with me as 'cargo'.. i was wondering how this worked and if its expensive or whatever..

there's some stuff on their website, but no prices..

hey dude. yes it will be very expensive! air freight is generally around $10.00 per kg. That is also not including oddsized packages (for instance if you were to ship back a racing bucket, then an oddsize fee would apply). Duty is calculated at 30% of total value. so if your shipment is $1000, duty is $300. Yes you can always lie about the total value, but you're taking a risk because 1: if customs really finds out how much that stuff is worth, look out and 2: if that shipment gets lost and you said its only valued at $100 when it's really $1000, you'll only be seeing a $100 check to reinburst you. Nav Canada assess a $15.00 fee and then there's still customs fees and taxes to be paid.

So, for example, if you were to ship a set of coils that weigh a total of about 15kg and valued at $1000, you would have to pay $150.00 shipping, plus $300 duty, $15.00 nav can, $10.00 (i think it is) customs and $150 pst and gst. so in total, your shipping would cost $625.00. very pricey. for me though, it would cost about $70.00. so what you could do is a) either carry your parts back as checked baggage or b) wait till i go over.

damn!.. that is expensive..

i also read something on the page about 'Air Canada Cargo Capacity Opportunities'..

i'm not 100% sure, but it sounded kinda like stand-by for cargo.. is that correct? would that be any cheaper?

reason i'm asking all these questiosn is i want to buy a sh** load of parts and i would rather do it myself and not have to put anyone out of their way.. my cousin lives in tokyo, but the hassle for her would be ridiculous

well i'll tell you what, if you're interested, me and you can arrange a time to take a trip over to tokyo for parts buying/shipping. you arrange the accomodations, and i'll arrange the cargo, flights, travel

Never heard of that cargo plane, but the otgher i know of is if you are a registered business, you can call air canada customer services and have a business account with them to ship cargo. You could even get your own container!! i'm not sure on the pricing however, i think its more attractive if you are deal with quantity as oppose to a one time shipment. All cargo goes standby dude, cargo is never garaunteed to make it within a specific time frame unless specified for and paid for.
