4afe- 1994 in 1997????

Does anyone know why a 1994 4afe would not fit a 1997 car? For some reason the interchange says it is a no go? I have the 1994 engine on hand and I have my eye on a 1997 with a bad engine. thanks guys

What interchange?? The motor will fit but chances are the 97 has a 7AFE not a 4AFE so you'll need the ECU and probably a few other things.

No diff in the heads. If the salvage car has a 4AFE also, there will be no problem.

You might run into difficulties if the salvage is a 7AFE auto, then the ECU might not match well with the engine I don't think (but would likely still work) and I'm not sure if the auto trannys between 4A and 7A are the same.

In general, the 4AFE will fit and work if the salvage has a 4AFE.

The only dif between 94 and 97 4AFEs are minor tunings. This should be a direct swap. If both are 4AFE then there is no problem.

FYI everyone:
4AFE has 3spd auto and 7AFE has 4spd auto.

Don't forget, the '94 is OBD1 and the '97 is OBD2, so there are wiring changes. You'll have to either make sure the '94 engine can be converted to use with an OBD2 harness, or convert the '97 to OBD1.

The easiest thing to do is just take the '94 long block and swap it with the '97 and then you won't have to worry about any wiring, except maybe the plug for the oil pressure guage some minor thing like that....

Good advise Dr. Tweak. That was my main plan, provided there are no other major obsticles. I would like to just use the long block.
