Yes.. lots of work and money.

Yes.. lots of work and money.

You'll have to find a donor car for all the transmission parts its not like you can just take the transmission and pop it in, you'll need the manual transmission, shifter, shifter cables, clutch pedal assembly, clutch cables, and anything that a manual transmission uses that an auto wouldn't have.

A tranny swap isn't that bad. Can you do any of the work yourself?

i'm pretty sure its not just the tranny you have to change. consider axles, ecu, shifter and who knows what else...sry this is off the top of my head...or my ass, but it sure has truth to it.

but i can assure you it will be uberly expensive.

Not sure if the US spec AEs have the transmission specific ECUs but I know the Japanese AE101/110 Levins and Truenos have them.. Auto and Manual ECUs are different in these cars since the ECU also controls the transmission.

We are talking about doing this transmission swap to a 03 , I would think that this kind of swap has not been done yet unless there is by fluke only one person who has done this, nobody here can give you an idea of the time it takes and the problems they ran into doing it.
The car would still have powertrain warranty remaining ?, so right there you would void whats left if you did the swap.

The way I see this mod being done if you would still attempt this is to buy a rebuildable from the wreckers and swap the parts required for the change, cost and time invested unkown. If this is your only car it would be off the road for some time.
Before going any further I would be at the dealer checking to see what else is different from an auto to stick (beside the obvious)To see if the part numbers are the same for the ECM, caytalitic converter, motor mounts and other parts mentioned in previous posts.

My answer is find another car in your area thats stick make a trade, take a loss maybe you'll get what you want and won't end up with two cars not running in your driveway , it's not worth the headache and the cash out lay to swap your current vehicle over.

Yes you can turbo an automatic as turbo's run off exhaust gases I'm not sure if they are available for Corolla's.
What reason do you have for wanting to change anyway

It's only an 03.. should've bought standard to begin with.. easiest way to do the standard to auto conversion.. trade the car in and get a standard.

Whoa there, you guys are jumping to conclusions way too fast.

The 03 Corolla auto to manual swap has been done by a handful of people. And has been done for under $600 dollars, closer to $500. The guy who did it got into a car accident a few months later and never posted his DIY guide on it. A shop would do it for around $1000, so $1600 total for a shop to do it, less than $600 if you can handle it on your own, that includes full kit plus a new clutch, and against popular opinion, it IS a direct bolt on with nothing more than the tranny, some shifter cables, the shifter, the clutch pedal, ECU, and some other odds and ends.

The reason why the guy did it was because the dealership only had an automatic at the time he needed a car. He had it modified and realized that he could never hit full potential unless he put a manual tranny in there. All people have thier own reasons.

I have done a manual tranny swap into an Accord before and it wasn't hard. We got all the parts from the local junk yard off of a same model Accord.

Pricing changes and depends on where you pull your parts. Someone offered me a manual 03 Corolla with the whole rear end almost smashed off because it was hit by a truck for $600 total. Engine, tranny, whole front completely intact. I turned it down because I didn't need another car in my garage, but good deals are floating.

Besides the point, I haven't seen a single 03+ swap done for more than 800 if done by the owner.

What are the chances of him doing his own install?? 95% of the people get thier stuff installed.. not too many go the DIY way.
