Speaking of oil changes...

I just finished my first one on the '05.
Mobil 1 and a Wix(NAPA Gold) filter.
Very easy.

Two things I learned.

I won't use the Fumoto quick drain plug for the first time in a long time in my vehicles.
I don't like the way it sticks out beyond the oilpan.
Could be a problem if the wife or me should run over something.
I didn't have a new washer for the stock plug.
Hope it doesn't leak.
Hasn't yet.

Also learned even though that filter is tiny you should fill it with oil.
I had a couple of seconds of some scary noise on initial startup.

The change does take 10 minutes like someone mentioned.

Didn't notice any noise on mine but the oil pressure light took about 2 seconds to go off. Usually it goes off immediately when the engine starts.

But I forgot to pre-fill the filter. Will do it next time around. Easy on the Corolla with the filter open end up.

How can I remove the oil filter from a 2005 Corolla? I failed to remove it with my hand, I failed to remove it with a plastic oil filter wrench. Any advice on what type of wrench should I use?

What Wix / Napa filter did you use? 1394? If you have clearance, you can fit the Napa 1396 filter on there if you want. It is about 1/2" longer than the 1394 filter. My 2.2l Camry supposed to use the 1394 but I put the 1396 on there and I haven't seen ill effects from it.

If you cannot remove it with the wrench, last resort is destruction method. Use a pair of channel locks or a a screwdriver.

Thanks guys - I will try that wrench and see what happens. I can't believe Toyota tightened the filter sooo hard. I didn't buy that wrench in the first place because there is barely enough space to my hand - let alone that wrench... This will be the project for this weekend...

i had that problem in my rsx, where the filter is tiny as fuck (so no filter wrench i got would get it off) and it was super tight cuz firestone did the oil change last time. I found that if u run teh car, so that it gets nice and warm, then take it off, it should come right off using your hand.

Is the tool of choice for the smaller filters, and a 'flex head' socket wrench driver works wonders!

I don't think that'll work on an '05.
I couldn't use a band wrench.
Not enough room to turn the filter.
The 'flex head' socket wrench driver Hajoka mentions would work very well.
I didn't have one but I was fortunate the Toyota dealer who did the first change(free)hand tightened the filter.
So with a strip of sandpaper around the filter I was able to get it off with just my hand.
Hand tightening is all that needed.

OK..I'll take your word for it.
Hastings filter at one time had that nut on the bottom of the filter.
It's a great idea.

I like it because you can use it almost in a vertical position(only way you can get at that filter)...My first "do it myself" oil change I used a regular channel lock and it came off after a little sweat..but your right it sure is tight in there...Radd Guy...
