Corrolla 4age distributorand Mr2 4age distributor cap ???? back fire?

Hey im sorta new here and ive been building this 85 sr5 project car for like a few months finally got it wired and got all the parts I needed ( so i thought). i wired it up and got every thing hooked up and when i went to start it I it cranked but the motor doesnt even bump over. The only sign of compbustion I got from the motor was a Back fire thru the intake.

SO..... I checked my timing and its all good. and i noticed that my distributor cap was loose. reason being the distributor cap didnt bolt up to the distributor. You can only use one of the two mounts at a time because it doesnt match up. Since I work at Advanved auto parts I went to look up the distributors that i got with the motor and I had a MR2 85 4age distriutor cap on it and the engine appears to be from a corolla gts. ( has the dual runner intake that faces towards the front of the car.) I checked to see if the distributors from the mr2 version and corolla version 4age are the same but from the part numbers they appear to be different. So im thinking this could be the cause of my nostart situation and why my car back fires on start up and doesnt turn over. mechanical ignition timing is way off in my guess.

Some one let me know if im right Ill know tomorrow when i go to get my cap that i ordered.

Well.. if only one bolt lines up and the other one doesn't... what would you think??

Last year my motor used to backfire sometimes and it used to sputter when it was cold, turns out one of the bolts on the cap had come lose and it would sputter because moisture would go into the cap.

um... they're a little different.... but they should still bolt up......

the difference is where the wires come out of the cap.... but that shouldn't change the position of the electrodes on the cap... since ALL 4age's have the same firing order... be it an early bigport, a late bigport, or a smallport

hell... i started with a late bigport dizzy from an ae86 in my smallport with a smallport cap & rotor...... now i have a bigport cap from an ae82 on it... no problems (other than the last one lost it's carbon button)

cool thanx man now i have to start a new thread problem not fixed at all got worse with the news cap. whenit back fires it isnt just smoke anymore its a huge flame that will blow the intake pipe off and shoot a blue and yellow flame out of the throttle body if its opened up a little. fuel pump is working great now though. I have a few questions though what direction should my timing belt rotate when starting and running clock wise or counter clock wise? and where are the timing diagrams on this site or a timing faq to follow see if my timing is way off? only things i can think of that would cause back fire. if my motor for my starter is rotating the motor the wrong way or my timing is hella off.
