4AFE/E57 Questions
I'm new to this forum -- hope this aren't dumb questions.
My '89 All-trac wagon smokes blue for about 30 seconds or so after it's been sitting for a few days. Compression is good and it gets about 2000/quart, so I'm guessing valves seals. Can I put each cylinder at TDC, pressurize the cylinder, and replace the seals one cylinder at a time? I'd don't want to take the head off if I don't have to.
I drive mostly interstates where the speed limit is 75mph and the traffic generally goes 85 to 90mph. The tach reads about 4500rpm at 90mph, and although I'm not worried about the engine running for hours on end at that speed, the mileage does drop below 22mpg. The fifth and fifth-driven gears look like they're easy to get to. Is their any way I could swap them out with a higher gear ratio to drop the rev's down 500 or 1000rpm at 90mph? I don't want change the axle ratio...two axles, too much money.
Third, fourth, and fifth gear syncro's are going south (the previous owner let the gearbox oil get low due to a bad axle shaft seal), so I bought a parts car for $200 on eBay. Drove the parts car 1200 miles home and the trans is great. I'm taking the engine/trans out of the parts car now and will yank my engine/trans out next month to swap transmissions. It's getting a new clutch/PP/TO bearing and rear main seal, a timing belt and water pump, and I'll replace all of the vacuum hoses that are a PITA to get to with the engine in. Anything else I should take care of/replace while the engine/trans is out? The only other thing I can think of is to repack the CV's while the axles are out.
Engine is 4AF-E, bone stock. Lot's of torque for 1.6L. Not the fastest car on the road, but cruises nice at 90mph. The AWD is great for snowed-in mountain passes.
