RWD Corolla Q's.

I have acquired a RWD Toyota coupe from an abandoned vehicle impound auction. I think it is an '86. The Auto. Trans. is completely reamed, and the engine has low compression, but runs. The rest of the car is in surprisingly good shape.

I know that some people are partial to this model. I'm trying to get a clue whether it's worth rebuilding or whether it should be sold to an enthusiast for parts. Any insight would be valued.

I know that parts for this are going to be absurdly expensive, but are they readily available? Does anyone recommend a particular AT rebuild kit/source?

Thanks,

Hamish

It looks like you picked up an SR5 which isn't as desirable as the GTS due to differences between the engine/tranny/interior/suspension/brakes/bodywork, If you plan to rebuild it to stock specs I would say that its not worth it. If you plan to upgrade to GTS running gear then I would say it is worth it. Or just sell the rolling shell to me.

Oh but to answer your question, you may be better off swapping in a manual, theres a guy in the classifieds selling a 5spd manual tranny that will bolt up to your engine.

I might consider letting it go, rather than messing with an AT, but I live near Washington, D.C. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that is some distance from Brampton.

Quite some distance, I'm in the Toronto area. If you can provide pics of the body/motor I may still be interested.

I'll try to get around to sending some photos soon. I really might consider selling it. It seems like it could be a fun car, but my forte is not Toyotas, but Mazdas.

I was going to keep the AT in it, as it would be for my daughter. Because she is likely to pile it up on the rocks within a month or two, maybe a better alternative would be to get it out of here and get her a Protege or 626. She won't know the difference.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Yes, then, I agree. Currently, though, I'm just trying to put wheels under her. Maybe I'd better stick to the wheels I'm more familiar with and have parts for. Probably should have thought again before I purchased this one, but it looked good and went cheap.

Seduced by the dark side,

Hamish

I'm such an insensitive asshole, my apologies Ahmed. But, I think you'd agree if you ever drove an SR5 AE86.

don't worry, he was talking about the ae86 SOHC one

but even though the ae92 SR5 is DOHC, it still isn't exactly that popular.....

so its up to YOU guys with SR5s (or 4af(e) owners to bring the name to the light!!

don't dis on the SR5

hey, the SR5 4A-C SOHC isnt all that bad. hell it made me a much better driver. sure it doesnt have the flair of the DOHC 4A-GE, but it still moves and driiifts. dunno i'm surpised what i can get out of it. i've never driven a gts so i'm not all sure what the differences are in "feeling". i know spec differences but thats about it, i have to "feel" it. whichs brings me to a curious little question for those of you who have driven both. how much of a difference can you "feel"?

i've surprised a few people what my car can pull off. and anyone who's driven it fall sin love with it, so i do not share. 86 is an 86 man, both great cars.

Its difficult to explain, the 4AG loves the revs, it runs to redline when you let it loose above 4g on the tach, its still not a dragstrip terror but it holds its own nicely. The 4AC is just as bulletproof as the G but it isn't as willing to snap the tach needle all the way to the right.

skeetz:

i've had a good share of both worlds.. but all my sr5's were autos, and they are not easy to pull drifts with.. and not all sr5's and gts's handle the same way. since the cars we buy from previous owners may or may not have taken care of suspension components (or get them replaced). i've had an sr5 that cornered very very well, even better than my first gts. but then the next sr5 i had (2 weeks afterwards) was very hard to handle (even though i out cornered a gti 1.8T with that)
