Well, I took the sunroof on my 89 SR5 out today. I had bought one new operator cable for $160 and between that and the used parts I got for $50 from down the road I was able to rebuild the sunroof on my 89 SR5. I had looked at 3 sunroof cars for sale and they all had similar problems, and none of the roofs worked on any of the cars. On the car that I bought my roof was not opening and the sunroof panel was drooped down on the left side rear. Once I got it apart I found the cables for both sides were broken, so I was able to use a used one & the other new. I cleaned and relubed the tracks and slippers, the reasembled it all and reinstalled the subrooof. It took a couple of tries to get the motor/limit switch panel phasing correct(so that the motor stopped when the panel was completely closed). A local Toyota parts guy had scared me off the car because of this problem at first, but I was glad to have persisted & bought it anyways as I easily fixed/rebuilt the sunroof although I must say the assembly does break down into many places. Toyota designed the subroof to allow for it to leak substantially, if you've got a roof that actually leaks water into the passenger compartment then you've got serious problems. Any bonehead can easily fix these sunroofs, although with the cables at $160 each one has to really want it fixed. If you have to pay somebody to fix these type of problems on your car, then it's time that you bought a new car.
Just bought a '90 SR5 and the sunroof is inoperable. No response from the motor when I hit the switch so I'm guessing either the motor is fried, the switch is buggered or the wiring is fracked somewhere.
Just wondering whereabouts the motor is located for the sunroof and how I get at it? Don't have a Haynes manual or anything yet so I'm flying blind!
Thanks in advance
Shawn

Well while we're on the sunroof topic, mine just broke too, when I try to open it it sounds like two gears are gridning the shit out of eachother and the roof only opens half an inch before it gets stuck. Any ideas? lol

any moron can fix the sunroof on one of these cars. Just don't start doing it on a rainy day. Usually you will have to take it apart to find out what is wrong with it, then order and wait for the parts. One thing is for sure....if you've got one broken cable(most common) and the roof only moves just a bit.....just keep trying it and you'll fuck up the other cable too...but that's no problem, they are only about $200 each. Take it apart, clean all components, replace whatever cable, and put your subroof, headliner, and the rest of the interior together.
yah, that'll fix it. FUCK!!! What a moron!!! Actually, I can't beleive some of the idiotic shit I read on this thing. Some stupid shits, who have no clue about which end of the dipstick to check for oil, will ask about something like an engine swap or if they can swap from an automatic to manual transmission or add a twin turbo. Not a fucking clue, yes it can be done but not by some clueless dickhead. That's why the guys at the dealerships are willing to help you out. You pay the big bucks, and we'll do an easy repair and charge you an arm & a leg. Man, you should see some of the dumb-ass stuff I see guys try to do to fix their rides. Yah, I like to see this kind of shit cause it's paying my mortgage bigtime. Cheers.
What is with the new, rude and short tempered TN members as of late? Why lash out at me? All I did was say that a sunroof repair isn't worht 200 dolalrs to me because I don't care aobut having a sunroof, so rather then waste 200 fixing it I'll have the sunroof eliminated when I get ym bodywork done.

I don't know where you've been all your life, but not everyone has the time, money, or skills to fix stuff. Forums are for advice and encouragement - not insults and crying. Before you mock the intellegence of others, why dont you try and remember why it was nessessary for you to open your big mouth.
advice:
My sunroof is working now as good as it's ever been and it's 16 years old ! I dont use it that often, because the few times when it is needed, I want it to open. Just remember this : the more times it's needlessly used, the less time you'll be able to use it later on down the road.

Gee, that's a good idea. OK. ......nothing more needs to be said after that statement.
Is that sarcasm, asshole? Or are you coming to your senses and realizing the facts? Save us all the trouble and dont post anymore, because no one gives a shit what you say when you act like that.
