I just purchased a 2005 Toyota Corolla LE. The car has only about 6-10 miles on it. Whenever I shift into reverse, I get a loud clunk like someone taping a metal pipe with a screw driver.
I also own another 2005 LE and it made the same noise but not nearly as loud and on this one, at 300+ miles the noise is gone?
Any suggestions on urgency of this noise and if I should immediately go back to the dealer. I just bought the one with the loud noise last night.
The reason why I am hesitant is because every time in the past I have brought cars under warranty to dealer, they fix one thing and the car ends up having something else wrong that was never a problem before it went it.
I drove the car around today and the noise is haphazard in the fact it does not happen every time now.
I am going to give the car a few days to see if it works itself out like the other one did?
I will give an update but funny that both new cars do it. I will see if I am doing anything to cause it but shifting to reverse can't be easier, there is really nothing anyone can do to not to do it right.
Scary for sure... I test drove a bunch of automatics last week and never noticed anything like that.. I wound up buying a 5 speed manual LE though.. Hope they take care of it for you.

I purchased the silver from Atlantic Toyota and the Phantom Gray from Millenium Toyota.
Both cars seem to be making the noises less as they break in. The Silver, the sound is just about gone now, the phantom gray, happening much less as miles get on the car.
Give it some time....see what happens as they break in.
Can you describe the noise some more? is it like an exhaust clanging noise? or is it from the transmission? clunk?
when does it occur? just on idle? upon acceleration?

Noise cont'd for a few days, took it to toyota, nice mechanic took a ride with me and sure enough, he got the car to make the noise 3 times in a row.
Funny, my wife found a forum somewhere, where a lot of people complain of the same noise when shifting into reverse form park and sometimes drive.
He said it could be a loose axle, sticky caliper or tranny. Either way, I got a loaner and they said the car is undrivable until they fix it.
Toyota Corporate will get a call and I will try and change the car. After spending a crap load of money, why keep a car with 200 miles that has been taken apart somewhat. It won't be the same.
