Boost gauge or Vacuum gauge

My friend has a 96 corolla. he just installed a Vacuum gauge. It works fine. When he hits the gas hard or near halfway down. the vacuum goes to zero. Would it have gone to the pressure side if he had a boost gauge. What i am wondering is would it have been better to put a boost gauge in instead of a vacuum.

No. A boost guage only will read boost if you HAVE boost, from a turbo or a supercharger. The vacuum guages goes to 0 because there is no vacuum, ie: you're at wide open throttle. Exactly what it should be doing.

I was just wondering what is the purpose of running a vacuum gauge?

To tell whats happening in the intake manifold. you can tell if you have an intake leak with a vacuum gauge.
