I have a 1980 Corolla and access to (2) 22R motors for free.
How hard is it to swap the 22R into the Corolla. I have tools and some fabrication skills. Can the 22R be bolted directly onto the stock 5-speed transmission, or should I use the tranny from the 22R.
Also, it is a carbureted engine, so wiring shouldnt be THAT complicated..... right?
and what about emissions? I Live in CA and I've heard there are some tough restrictions on engine swapping....anybody know more?

Why would you want to get rid of a 3TC motor in favor of a 22R? The 3TC has a ton of aftermarket part available for it. You can easily get 200 hp out of a T motor. What you should look into doing instead of putting a 22R in the car is doing a 2TC/3TC hybrid which is putting a 2TC head on a 3TC. the 2TC has better flowing head and the 3TC has a bigger displacement. Just because you get a free motor doesn't mean you should use it in the car you have. Honestly stick with the T motor it is a lot better motor then an R motor.
sell the 22R motors and used the money to replace parts on the 3T. both engines are good, i just don't like to go through so much hassle if i'm staying stock.

what makes the 3t-c better. If i can get a 22r for free, which has about 40 more HP, and have it installed by a professional for free, why not? I'd rather not spend the money on modifications for the 3tc. It seems to me that a 2.4 Liter OHC motor would have more potential for hop ups than a 1.8 liter pushrod motor.
3tc has a better head and you don't need any fab work on it becuase you already should have one in your car. Another great thing about the 3tc is it has a good rod-stroke ratio so you can get a lot more rev's out of it than a 22r. Yes stock vs. stock a 22r is better but 3tc's take to mods like you wouldn't believe. I tried modding a 22r in my 77 celica. 22r block, 20r head. lc cam, header, sidedrafts etc. and although it was really torqey it basically turned into a waste of money (not that fast, poor fuel economy) and I ditched it and went with something else (7mge). Bigger displacement can't always make up for a poor engine design.
Ok well I think I'll keep the 3tc then just to save me the trouble.
NOW A PROBLEM-
I turn my car on, it runs for about 5 seconds, and then dies.
Vacuum leak maybe?
could a bad PCV valve be causing this?
please any info would help I need a running car!!

Sounds like a fuel problem although I can't tell for sure jsut by going off of what you say. Just buy a new weber carb downdraft or two sidedrafts and that will fix your problem more then likely and you will be gaining some power out of it as well.
If you have one of those translucent fuel filter check for debris build up on the bottom of it. If so you may have a lot of tiny debris in the fuel float bowl.
If you can take the air horn off and suck out all the crap out of the float bowl and clean with carb cleaner and suck out as much debris as you can. I would not use compressed air to blow it out. Some might get blown into a jet and really screw the carb up.
I use a vacuum brake bleeder to suck up all the junk.
I know everyone bashes the R's... but I stuck a 22RE (carbed), comp 268 cam, some other stuff, and home-built 2.5" exhaust into my '80 corolla coupe and it blew the doors off my buddy's integra. The reason I went with this set up is because I wanted to make a budget sleeper that was easy to get parts for. If you do the swap, you'll need to make mounts about 3.5" forward and swap the tranny to the w56 (I think), and get the crossmember (and front half of the driveshaft) from a celica supra as well.

Hey man just some corrections for you. If the engine was carbed then the engine code has no E in it. An E in the engine code means it is fuel injected. As for the tranny You mean either a W55 or a W58 no W56's back then for that application. As for an R motor I love 2XR's. I built a pretty mean 20R/22R hybrid when I had my old 81 celica and I loved it sooooooo much. It produce so much torque. I never got to run it with anyone or on a track but me and all my buddys beleive it would have been a low 14 second car.
Ya I know what you mean about the "E"... lots of confusion!! Up here you could still get a factory carbed 22RE until about '93 or so. By 22RE I mean the engine designation ('85 and newer), not injection method, and the engine I put in was very definitely an RE. As for the tranny, I just couldn't recall the #. Great combo though.

Ok you you can't have a factory carbed and have a 22RE that would be a 22R. That is how the factory decides the codes for th eengines. the 22 means it is the 22nd generation of that block. The R stands for the type of block it is and if the engine code ends in an E then it means it is fuel injected. If there is no E then it is carbed. You can't have it from the factory with an E unless it is fuel injected.
