exhausts questions

hey alls, this question is quick and simple, but im still new to cars and it keeps bothering me, so thanks for answering.....would a cat-back increase more hp than a sports muffler? or a straight pipe? for example....

a cat-back increase more hp (http://www.raceperformanceparts.com/...images/WS2.jpg)

an after-market sports muffler doesn't increase as much hp but sounds a lot better (http://importtuner.com/tech/0306it_ppdelsol06_s.jpg)

is this correct? what about a straight pipe? i know straight pipes sounds really loud but does it increase hp as much? thanks in advance, sorry if the question is nooby

and any recommendations for my 94 dx?

Naah, trying to increase horsepower with a cat -back, doesnt increase it noticeably. Full exhaust pipe will bring some gains, again you wont notice it, because, we're talking along the lines of 5-10hp.
Both intake, exhaust side (and I dont mean an cai-airfilter and a muffler) will produce gains if you can make the engine flow more.
Straight pipes are just horrible, good luck with the cops and with your hearing with one of those....again, just the pipe wont do shit

the cat back will give you more power over just a sport muffler.

it won't make sense just to get a cat-back without upgrading the muffler. you will get some hp gain but not to much; besides if you get only the catback it will sound loud, but that is because the air is not properly released. the muffler will give about 2hp gain to the wheels.

I recommend if you do the cat-back you also get a high flow muffler; together they will give a little more power to the wheels and it will sound a lot nicer.

Straight pipes will give you a lot more power than the cat-back, because nothing slows down the flow from your manifold to the exhaust pipes. but remember it is not legal, if a cop spots it, he'll most likely tow the car.

A cat-back IS a muffler.. its called a "cat-back" because you're replacing everything from the catalytic converter to the back.. including the muffler. A sports exhaust would mean you're replacing the exhaust only.

You get a bigger HP gain when you replace the entire system. Headers, cat, exhaust and upgraded piping to a bigger diameter.
