What is the best year/model of the corolla? in terms of performance and such, EXCLUDING the XRS

I think you may have just opened up a can of worms there. Everyone has differing opinions.

My opinion though - the AE101 ('91-95 in Japan) Levin GT-Apex. The Silvertop was the closest thing Toyota has to a race spec 4 cylinder and even a '91 (mine is Oct '91) has comforts like Climate control. Reliability is also top notch.

*edit* Obviously the one pictured is not a GT-Apex. Just about everything else minus the shell is off of one however. And i have had the pleasure of actually driving a GT-Apex and a GT-Z.
