Howdy, all! I was in an accident in my SR5; had a medical problem that caused me to say goodnite while driving, and I hit a pharmacy sign post at about 40 MPH. Thank god for my little car. Having no airbag saved my life! The car is totaled though, which makes me really sad. Doing better now, kinda. Anyway, for your info, the car held up very well, the radiator was pushed up into the engine 10+ inches, but the dash stayed out of my lap, which was good. I figured that a car like that would fold up like tinfoil in a wreck like that. So, anyway, my new car is a Caddy SLS, so I will probably check out that forum too. Hope everyone else is doing good! Enjoy your Corollas, and feel good knowing that they are safer than they look!!
I dont want to sound like an asshole, but I probably will, but..

If you had a medical condition that made you do that, what were you doing behind the wheel? Thats really irresponsible, you could of wiped out someone... You were lucky.
A lot of drivers pass out while driving. Sometimes they don't even know something is wrong until it happens. Maybe Dannie didn't know about his problem. Anyhow, I would rather be on the road with a few folks with a medical problem than all these bozos with cell phones not paying attention to anything but their conversation. As for airbags, I have disconnected them on all my cars that have them. I am a fleet mechanic for a taxicab company and I have seen what airbags can do when they go off. We have a Lumina in our lot right now that was in an accident and the right bag inflated and blew the windshield out. Seatbelts and shoulder harnesses are much safer. If the bags only went off in a very serious collision, I would feel better about them, but they tend to go off in minor fender benders where injuries would be very unlikely anyhow.
By the way, dannie, what year Corolla did you have?? Glad you are OK, but hate to hear about your car.

Hello again. I had heat stroke, and was not sick or anything before it happened, so who knows. The accident happened next door to my house. If I knew anything was wrong, I would never have driven anywhere. Thanks for the well wishes from everyone. No airbag saved my life means that if I had one it would have broken my neck because of the way I was positioned in the car at the time of the wreck. I was one of the few lucky ones out there. Good day to all!! Oh, Yeah, the car was an 89, almost forgot to put that in! Also, I am a commercial driver, so yearly phisicals are the norm...
I was almost killed in an accident being hit head on by a driver who fell asleep... scary stuff to think about. We were in a 98 Tacoma and we got hit by a lifted F150. Both trucks going at least 45mph. I was the passenger so I didnt get the air bag in my face. My friend did. He also broke his femur completely in half. I broke my foot beyond repair in 4 places, collar bone, split my head open requring 24 staples
sorry off topic.
hope you heal quickly.
and i hope everyone else learns a lesson from our experiences.
Hello again. I had heat stroke, and was not sick or anything before it.
Wow, heat stroke is no joke. I had it once and I never want that to happen again to say the least. That was probably the worst experience I've ever had. I'm actually lucky to be here in good shape considering that I had a 107.8 fever.
i just rolled my truck in late july. fractured C6 (6th vertabre) and my friend died in the accident because he wasn't wearing his seatbelt. He actually hit me on his way out of the windshield, which caused the fracture. If he would've been wearing his belt we'd have both gotten bruises and thats it. His watch relected the sun into my eye and I looked over and missed a corner (1.5mi from my house, so I knew the road) got on the gravel, kicked the back around, slid sideways on 2 wheels across the road and rolled into the ditch. From the back the truck looks like nothing happened. PM me or email me (i975663238844@hotmail) for pics if you'd like to view.

Glad you're ok. You WERE very lucky that it was only a post that you hit.
I had an airbag deploy on my 94 Corolla when I T-boned someone (well, more like L-boned them). For those of you who have never experienced an airbag deploy on you--imagine someone punching you in the face while pouring boiling water all over your face. I was doing maybe 30 mph, and the other car was pulling out of a driveway, so she probably wasn't going over 10 mph. Totally a waste for the airbag to deploy; my passenger and I were both wearing seatbelts, which would have been sufficient. Instead, I also ended up with numerous facial burns and a busted lip. The day before I was to participate in a ceremony, too. Good thing I'm a woman and I could justify plying on the makeup to cover my burns. Luckily most of the burns were gone within a week, but one place took a month to heal.
I don't blame people who turn off their airbags one bit.
why does it feel like boiling water? Is the Airbag full of hot air or hot water or something?
No...but I was making a reference to how hot that airbag is. It can burn your face and rub the skin off it in parts, as well as give you a busted lip (thus the reference to being punched). It did for me, anyway. It's about as hot as a pot of boiling water, and can scald you just as badly. I've poured boiling water over my hand accidentally while cooking, and I remember that the feeling between that and the airbag were quite similar.
Apparently the "boiling water" is part of the chemical reaction in the airbag which causes it to expand. Doesn't sound fun. On another note, why do some cars have on/off switches for airbags. Do they hop in and say " I think I'll value my life today" ?? For example, my dad's 2000 Plymouth Prowler has that option on the passenger side. I tell you what if I crashed his I'd rather die in the crash than him finish me off with his bare hands.
