Hello ... My name is Kellie ... I own a 1982 Toyota Corolla 1.8 ... I am haveing a little bit of trouble with it ... I need to know if it has a internal or external regulator on the altanator ??? I bought it from some one who had NO IDEA what they were doing ... The altanator that is in the car says it is external, but we can not find the regulator any where ... Can someone direct me to where it might be located ??? Also, there is a white thick wire that I know is a ground wire ... Where does it connect to ??? And one last thing ... Does anyone have a schematic for the wiring, just the alternator wiring should do ??? Or anyone know where I can get one ??? Thank You so much for all the help !!
If you have a white wire that goes to ground then it is a US spec external regulated alternator. It also has a round connector plug. Follow those wires to the regulator.

Ok ... Thank You ... But maybe you can help with the problem I am having ... I bought the external regulator the other night, there is not one already in the car ... But the alternator that is in the car says it uses an external regulator ... You see, the person I bought this car from had no idea what they were doing ... The wires from the alternator melted ... Which I am starting to think happened because he did not have the regulator ... When I got the car 6 months ago, it did not start ... Now it starts, but isn't charging the battery ... Which is now our only problem ... I bought the Chilton's Repair guide with the wiring diagrams, and I think I might be missing some of the wiring ... I seen the round connector plug off the new regulator, is there supposed to be a round connector coming off the alternator ??? I am so lost with this car .... It is very hard to find parts for it where I am ... And right now it is all original with 93,000 miles ... Any more help you could offer will be greatly appreciated !!!
The alternator will have a connector on the back for a plug connector from a wiring harness that goes between the alternator and the regulator. That must have been the wiring harness that melted.
The charging regulator looks to be mounted on the firewall. somewhere around the brake master cylinder. Since you have a REG look for one similiar on the firewall.
If you check the wiring diagram for your ALT and REG. The ALT has four wires that connect to the REG, N, B, E and F . But the REG needs six wires to function. The two additional wires come from the igntion IG and the charge fuse L .
So you must try and located the melted bits of harness find the ends and look at the connectors. The 4 terminal connector goes to the ALT for E,F, N, B then all six go to the REG E,F,N,B and L, IG in a six terminal connector.
Alt 4 wire harness -> main harness -> 2 wire + 4 wire -> 6 wire harness to REG
two separate harnesses connectors one for ALT and one for REG.
So I guess you will need a new ALT to REG harness or someone to rewire your ALT and REG.
Also make sure your battery is charged up before you hook up the alt and REG. An alternator is not meant to charge a dead battery and may burn things up if tried. Which
may have happened to the previous owner.
good luck

PS
I am just looking this up from the service manual. My 82 uses the internal reg. So I have not actually seen these pieces but am familiar with charging systems.
Thanks Hemi3tc .... You help is much appreciated .... Only one problem ... Still can't find the regulator ... Could it be possible that this car uses the internal ??? The vin # starts with JT ... Does that help or mean anything ??? This is so fusterating !!!! Thanks again for all your help !!!
My '81 Corollas (not for sale ) have external voltage regulators. They're a black box about the size of a pack of cigarettes (sorry for being politically incorrect) bolted onto the housing for the suspension at about the level of, and midway between, the brake master cylinder and the battery. Unlike many other bits and pieces it is really easy to see. I'm at work right now so I can't look at the car and tell you about the wiring. I seem to recall a small separate wire leading out of the regulator to something also screwed onto the mounting.
To the guy looking for an 81 Corolla: Look at the for sale section of www.toyota3tc.com There was somebody parting one out last week.
