Australia never got them -
New Zeland did. Big difference in import and design laws between us. New Zeland got all the better cars.
And that is mostly the problem why the US doesn't get half of these cars is because design rules and qualifications are far too strict.
For example: A McLaren F1 is not street legal in Australia not due to its amazing power-to-weight ratio, its capable speeds or brilliant safety. But simply because the driving position is in the middle of the car.
It costs company too much money for a higher priced or limited number cars to pass our countries regulations. They just would not sell because compliance of these cars would just add to the overall sticker price and decrease sales. It's all well and good to say that you will buy one. But if it's out of your price range you wont. Car companies know this and therefore only target countries where the regulations are less strict and they can get the price for the car that they know will sell volume - or all of them, whatever the case may be.
