Reverse is the only gear where you actually move the sprocket. Your clutch piston rod might need adjustment, check the fluidlevel and if its low, add some and bleed it.

that bleed is tougher than doing the brakes....nice bends in the lines trap the air

I found that when you unhook the speedometer, it seemed to make my clutch work better. Why not try that first. Good luck.

About the reverse thing, I had the same problem on my old car and then I read in a thread to bump it into third first then reverse (something about slowing the gear down so I could go into reverse or something) and I started doing that and have never had a problem since. I do the same thing in my new corolla just out of habit

actually what I find works real well when the car is stubborn to get into reverse gear is to just shut the car off, select reverse and then start it with the clutch in. You might also want to check the radiator coolant level to ensure that the clutch is getting cooled enough. Good luck.

Actually the reverse gear is opposite and you need to slow it down the fastest way and easyiest is to just let the clutch out half way then put it back in then it will go right into reverse.

You can buy a self bleeder for less than $10.00 US. and bleed it in about 5 minutes. Check your clutch master cylinder and make sure you have the proper fluid level when you finish bleeding it. I would check my clutch pedal adjustment too.
If you have a problem putting the gearshifter in reverse on the first try then do this: take your foot off the clutch pedal push it down again with a steady pressure and try to put it in reverse. Dont slam it, just apply a little pressure.

I think it would be best if you stop offering advice.
If you don't know don't make shit up.
K thx bye.

It's pretty normal for cars to be a little hard to get into reverse, just make sure your not rolling when you try.

wow, didn't even SEE this one.... quite hilarious....

first off, if you have problems with the reverse (which all C series trans i've owned do) then just leave it in neutral, release the clutch, push it back in and it should slide into gear....

if you have a problem getting it into 1st gear when stopped, that's when you want to start checking the clutch fluid levels and/or for leaks (well, it's always good to check the levels, and if low check for leaks).....

as for the 'radiator coolant level'.... wow.... that's an interesting one..... heat on a clutch is either from a lot of slipping the clutch (ie, new driver.. causing pre-mature wearing) or simply heat passing from the crank to the flywheel.... etc...

(the only thing that doesn't have contact with the radiator fluid, but CAN affect it.... so far that i've found... is the ignitor within the distributor.... and I only found this out once i did the 4age swap using the 4afe electronics.... i burned through ignitors if they weren't well cooled... and the 4afe dizzy just happens to be sitting next to a main coolant passage)

I've had that reverse problem pop up occasionally on every stick shift car I've ever owned (6 in total so far). Generally, reverse gear isn't synchronised, but apparently on some GM transmissions it is oddly enough. I find that putting the car into neutral, letting the clutch out for a second then shifting into reverse helps. If you put it into reverse with the clutch pedal pressed down and it crunches then that might indicate a problem. My 88 Corolla wagon does that sometimes.
