Swap Options for an AE91?

Im curious what my options are for a motor (& tranny) swap for my '90 AE91.
Ive never done a complete swap, but Ive got a decent amount of experience working on engines and have completely rebuilt my 4A-FE from an empty block up. Also my dad has been working on cars his whole life and has done multiple swaps from GTOs to Karmann Ghias. So the labor wont be a problem.

Im looking for a relatively cheap swap.
I just want a bit more power and a proper gearbox instead of my autotragic (Although, the 3A in my 'rolla is by far the most responsive auto Ive ever driven. Go figure.)

It would be nice to get a 20v GE in there... but I would be satisfied with a 16v GE.

So what do you guys think?

The Geo Prizm GSi (also an AE91) has this exact setup, so it should not present a big challenge. Your car is already wired for EFI, unlike my carbureted AE82.

I was thinking about that, but GSIs are hard to find.
Didn't the GSi come with the 20v motor?

it depends on what type of motor do you want. if you are after quick speed bursts, then go for the 16V since it's designed to give you that sudden rush feel, but if you want mid to top-end power (for out of town trips or any long drive that you would be doing regularly), then go for the 20V. just keep in mind that the 20V is built to run on 100-octane fuel (RON).

I'd say go with a silvertop 20V, they're cheap and easy to find these days.

How hard would it be to swap in the 20v?
And what kind of performance could I get?

Im thinking ~7.5-8 sec 0 to 60?

The motor fits right in.. the hardest part is the wiring really. The silvertop 20V is got 160hp so yeah 7-8sec times for sure. You will probably have to upgrade your fuel pump and probably fuel lines and I believe there's other things.

Check out club4ag.com in their tech reference section, they got a lot of info on 16V and 20V swaps. Damn.. we should build a 20V Swap sticky on TN.

4agze

Look for a levin or trueno frontclip with a 4AGZE. Very easy swap.

"Damn.. we should build a 20V Swap sticky on TN."

Oh man that would be sweet

"the hardest part is the wiring really"

You mean splicing the body harness to the engine harness?
Whats different about the 20v?
Forgive me if my comment seems silly. Ive never actually spliced harnesses (not engine harnesses, anyways) but Isn't it just a matter of matching the wires on the engine harness to the wires on the body harness? Or is that just stupid? =P
Just match, splice, solder, seal?

"The silvertop 20V is got 160hp"

Does the blacktop motor have more power?
Its been a while since Ive been into cars (Ive been in a long spell of having no money, and seperating myself from such expensive desires liek cars and paintball was a must ). I know one of the two is more powerful, but I forget which.
The reason I ask is that Ive seen a blacktop 20vb on venus-auto a couple of times now.

"just keep in mind that the 20V is built to run on 100-octane fuel"

Really?
I heard it ran just fine on 89 as long as it was stock.
Was I misinformed?

"3S-GE, 3S-GTE (need some custom work but it'll fit)"
Wont that:
A) Be uber difficult, and
B) Throw the weight way too far up front?

Thanks for all the info, btw, guys =)

3SGTE has been done plenty of times on AE92s. I've seen a couple of coupes and an AE92 4dr sedan that was owned by someone in Toronto.. very FAST!

the 20V is supposed to run on 100octane fuel.. but I think 100octane RON would be equivalent to probably sunoco's ultra94 fuel.

The motor fits right in like I said, doing all the wiring and ECU would be the hardest part, a lot of people seem to have trouble there. Remember the 20V 4AGEs have different ECU from the 16V and many other wires that a 16V probably don't have. Ryan aka KP61 in Toronto actually sells his services for wiring 20V motors as he has done this swap many times and probably knows which wire goes where and which one does what even if he was blindfolded.

Blacktop has 165hp, here's a link for all the 4AGE motors and their respective horsepower.

Again you come through with great info, Ren! =)

I think I would be better off going with the GZE, then.
With its lower static comp, I should be fine running regular pump gas.
Plus more power is just a pulley away, should I decide I need it.

As for the 3S-GTE... it's very intriguing.
Just how much money and complexity are we talking about?
And what gearbox would I use? The AE or the SW/ST?

I would LOVE to have 200hp in my 2400lb 'rolla... but I always figured that swap would be mucho-dinero and out of my league, even with the help of knowledgable freinds.
And, a pullied GZE makes close to 200hp anyways. And over 200 with cams.

So now Im strongly leaning towards a GZE conversion, after seeing this thread.
