Corolla 2002 bogging problem

Hi , I'm new here. Sorry for my bad english I'm come from Germany.

The reason why I'm writing here is I have a problem with my 2002 Corolla:

engine Code 3ZZ-FE 110hp 1.6L

1,5 months ago it beganns to bogging and hesitating when I drive with constant speed
for example 3rd gear and 25mp/h in the city. So I drive 3 days later to the local toyota dealer but on
this day the problem was not so extrem. He make an test drive with the obd tester and say all
sensors and values are ok and means the tires are the problem. So at home I change back to the
winter tyres and drive around the corner the problem comes up again. Back to the toyota dealer he means for
further investigations the car must be in the garage for a day and they look for the engine and
this cost. So I drive at home again , a friend from me said plug off your o2-sensor and drive
a round. So i do it and it was really disappears. So I have orderd by an internet shop for o2-sensors
a new sensor build it in and the same again. Then I reading something here in the forum and find something about
MAF-sensor so I build it out and looked if it is dirty no it was clean but i clean it also with carb cleaner
build in and the same. A friend from me has an obd tester and software for the laptop and has borrowed me so I
connect it and make an test drive now DTC comes up nothing the thing is how big must be the value for the maf ?
The obd-tool gives me the higest value by 5800 rpm with 64 g/s. I have found a term that says
hp * 0.8 = maf value so i calculate 110 hp * 0.8 = 88 g/s.
The last 3 days it was wery hot outsite temps here and the problem are worser. The Idle Speed is
first by 1000 rpm then it go to 700-800 rpms (i think this is normal) than after 2 -3 seconds
it goes to 500 rpm and the car is shaking. The accrelation is not normal for 110 hp the feeling says
me that is round about 80 hp.
So now I think the car running to lean, when I disc. the o2-sensor the ECU takes fixed richer values from the
memory so the car runs better. The Spark picture is not brown-white its more white. The sparks i have changed first ,
the complete air-intake system I have sprayed up with carb cleaner for vacum leaks all vacum hoses I have disc. and fixed
again nothing happend all the same. Tomorrow I want to drive to another Toyota dealer and I hope they found something with the
obd tester. When they found nothing I will say to him that they build in a new MAF only for a
test drive.
Can anyone here me give a hint to find it out over the obd tool , what is with the short time trim fuel and long time trim ?

best regards Joerg

check the carb spray that you used on the maf, if it has silicone in it that confuses the sensor and it should be cleaned off with throttle body spray or contact cleaner. have you replaced the air filter or is it old and clogged?

Hi , thanks for your answer ,

the air filter seems good , its only 7500 miles old.
Later I go to the garage and look what a cleaner I have used.
What I find strange is that on very hot days the bogging is not so extreme and on colder
days or early in the morning it is worser.

best regards Joerg

Well, you definitely want to get some real "throttle - body" cleaner because brake cleaner will not work properly.

But..........

Even so.........I would say that you should take it back to the dealer and let them do their testing. You really do not want to have to buy more parts than you need..........and that could easily happen. (I know because I have done that before while trying to troubleshoot a problem).

Make it the "dealer's" problem so that "they" have to fix it and make it right.

As an after-though.........I think that you can also safely use "Windex" (window cleaner) to clean the MAF sensor, if I remember correctly, and you want to use something cheap that is laying around the house. Just use the windex without the engine running. And if I'm remembering this wrong, somebody please correct me!

Good luck and greetings from the States!

Hi , in the morning I was by the dealer he drives the car with the tester and found nothing
all parameter are OK. So I make an date with it at next Wednesday for further investigations.
At home I go back in my garage disconneceted the battery and remove all connectors from the ecu and plugged it back. This I have made with all electrical connectors what I have seen in the car. Then I reconnect the battery and start and drive arround the corner and all is fine , it runs without any problems.
Now , I wait tomorrow and the Monday then I cancel the date.

best regards Joerg
