Canada 1990 corolla engines?

What is the difference between the 102 hp engine and 130 hp engine in the 1990 corolla sedan and GTS models? is it just a few parts that could be swapped? or is it something a noobie like me can't do ?

Well all engines were DOHC, 16-valve inline four-cylinders — the sedans, front-drive wagon and SR5 coupe got a carbureted 90-hp motor; the All-Trac wagons got a fuel-injected 100-hp version and the GT-S has a 115-hp EFI version. Not sure where you get a 102 and a 130-hp from.

Not sure about Canada, but the 4A-FE in the US version made 102 hp, and the later versions of the 4A-GE in the Corolla GT-S and the Geo Prizm GSi (1991-92) made 130 hp (actually, it was rated by the manufacturer as such; Toyota had already started overstating hp figures, which was why they had to re-rate the 7A-FE at 105 hp in 1995, down from 115 originally).

1988 & 1989:
Corolla Sedans: 4A-F (90hp)
Corolla Wagons: 4A-F (90hp)
Corolla SR5 Coupe: 4A-F (90hp)
Corolla GTS Coupe: 4A-GE (115hp)
All Prizms (except GSI): 4A-F (90hp)
All GSI Prizms: 4A-GE (115hp)
1990 & 1991:
Corolla Sedans: 4A-FE (102hp)
Corolla Wagons: 4A-FE (102hp)
Corolla SR5 Coupe: 4A-FE (102hp)
Corolla GTS Coupe: 4A-GE (130hp)
All Prizms (except GSI): 4A-FE (102hp)
All GSI Prizms: 4A-GE (130hp)
1992:
Corolla Sedans: 4A-FE (102hp)
Corolla Wagons: 4A-FE (102hp)
All Prizms (except GSI): 4A-FE (102hp)
All GSI Prizms: 4A-GE (130hp)
I have a good amound of confidence this is accurate for the United States. All engines are DOHC, 16-valve, I4s, all are Fuel Injected except for the 4A-F that is carb'd. Hope this helps!

AE92 So basically...

The only difference between my 1990 corolla 4-door plant and the GT-S plant is the power of course... but to swap tha power onto my block all i gotta do is get the wop end swapped? so does that mean my current power plant has only 2 valves per cylinder? and getting the top end swapped will produce the extra power? BTW i got the power numbers off consumer guide or something on the net.

your 4afe has 4 valves per cylinder..... the head design is what's called a slave cam. You have one cam that runs on the timing belt. Under the valve cover, each cam has a cog bolted to it which mesh with one another. This means that the cams actually run in opposite directions. Because of this, the cams are also closer together and have a narrower inlet for the valves. A twin cam (4age) has 2 cam gears on the timing belt, cams run in the same direction and have a wider stance from one another. Also, the 4age crank is stronger, has an 8 bolt crank (versus a 4afe 6 bolt crank).... the 4age crank is forged..... has stronger rods, and higher compression. The smallport (90-91) also has hookups in the block for oil squirters... the GTS came with an oil cooler, none of the other corolla's in the US came with them.

No, it has 4valves per cylinder.. like toyotaspeed90 said, they're different designs using the same basic block. Its cheaper to actually swap the whole motor, ECU and harness than just trying to do a "head swap".

the difference in power is based on the type of head there is to an engine code. the "F" head is the economical head of thw two whereas the "G" head is the "sport" unit for the engine.

i agree with ren69 that it would be easier and cheaper to swap the whole motor than just the heads.

If you want to do a head swap.. its better to do a 7AFE block and 4AGE head.. 7AGE more power, more torque.. but not too many people have done it.
