man i can't pass smog so i'm trying to do repairs and i'm becoming really frustrated.
i went to change my o2 sensor and i noticed the one i purchased is a single wire(which it should be for the year of my car) but the one on my damn car is a friggin 4 wire. at first i thought the parts store is wrong so i went back and argued with them until they let me look at the book and it showed all being 1 wire for my year 88. so i call toyota this monrning and they confirmed that it IS 1 wire and i'm like wtf is going on why do i have a 4 wire o2 this makes noooooooooo sense so now i'm tring to hunt down an o2 for a 1990 GTS which would happen to be 4 wire. go figure and every where i look its gonna be 150+ USD when the 1 wire is only 40 bux i'm like :-0 damn it. do u think its a possibility that the guy who owned the car before me swapped in a 1990 GTS engine and harness in my 1988 GTS or soemthing? i know it has TVIS tho so i don't think its a hi comp so now i'm like totally confuse as to whats going on with my car.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr smog frustrations. man i hate California sometimes
sorry had to vent.

why don't u call the previous owner up then? over here in ontario we can get something called a "used car package", and it basically shows the history of the car, who owned it, etc etc
would be useful if u can contact the guy, don't know if cali has something like this tho
i have an 88 trueno and it is a 4 wire on mine.
under the car where the o2 sensor fits trace the wire back to the harness and see if the harness connector is a 4 wire one or a single wire.

lol i'm kewl just confused as to where im gonna find an o2 that works.
yeah i am absolutely sure that i have a 4 wire, i found out last night when i was attempting to replace my current one and found that it wasn't a single wire.
how much can u get a replacement o2 for there in canada? do u know if i can use any universal 4 wire o2 for my car i mean as long as it has the correct flange and just solder it in to the correct harrness so that it fits?

You could even use a singlewire one
just leave the other 3 wires disconnected
you could, but if passing emissions is your beef, then i would stick with the 4 wire.
o2 sensors are about $150 for a NGK/NTK universal 4 wire, keep in mind, that this 4 wire has to be spliced to your harness, or even better to the old harness off the defunct o2 sensor
remove the old o2 sensor, and use the old flange, and the exxisting bung off the front pipe.

i just changed my oxygen sensor on my fx16 just 2 weeks ago, i'm gonna get a smog check soon. My engine is 4age, if yours is '88 i think it should have one wire, mines has one wire. the dealer said $133 for it, i said no way, went to autozone for 45 bucks Bosch direct fit, put it in, saved a ton of cash. The most easiest thing, easier than oil change, like 15mins max. maybe your engine was swapped. good luck
ok, i went on kragens/parts america website, they say the 1990 corolla gts has 2 wire sensor, the pre cat sensor BOSCH 12202 $75.99 direct fit, Autozone Bosch 12202 $54.99 direct fit. It also has 2 sensors a pre cat sensor & a after cat sensor. i don't know why you have 4 wire. the '88 has one wire, Bosh 12051 direct fit, if it is fuel injection. autozone has the lowest prices, in mine experience.
i don't know why i do either but yup it is a 4wire, positive, i took it off this weekend when i put on my headers. i'll have to post pix of my engine bay now with the polished valve covers and kbd headers and intake Thanks for the help guys
