Timing belt

Anyone know if the timing belt on the 91/1.8 engine is easy to change? Are these a "0 clearance" motor? Do I need special tools? Any help would be great..

I know with the 1.6 4age...should be the same for all a serie engine.

You just need a 10mm wrench (with the round grip) to loosen up the belt tentionner.
Than you just need a budy to push the tentionner as far away while you try to remove the belt for the top gears.
Then you use a 17mm rachet (probably with a force bar)and unbolt the cranck pulley.
Try not moving the pulley while unbolting it or your timing will be f***.
My trick is tu put a big screwdriver through the pulley tu make sure is block and can't turn while I'm removing the 17mm bolt.

Then you just have to take the pulley with your both hands and pull little by little, don't give a big pull or you'll end up with pulley marks on the face!

installation is opposite of removing! (took the last sentence from a haynes manual )

usually you should only have timing belt (big belt with gears on it) oil and alternator pump flat belt, power steering belt ...this one might be on your AC if you have one also..for right now I can't think of any other belts in the engine bay.

the timing belt is the one with gears on it
you have the water pump and alternator pulley
and then you have the power steering and maybe AC pump.

maybe yours are set differently but shouldn't have more than 3-4

you will have reteintionnor pulleys to hold each belts straight.
for the alt you should be able to loose one nut on the engine bracket and puch the alt toward the engine to loosen the belt.

for the power steering you have to unscrew the pulley under the PW until the belt is loose enough to be removed.

this is for a 16v 4age...not sure if it's exactly the same on 7afe but should change that much.

yes they are very easy to change, and if by 0 clearance engine, you mean an interferance egine------- they are not, so if you get it wrong , the valves will not kiss the pistons.
