Does it do it in first if you are light on the clutch?
If so, its the clutch slipping.

If it's ONLY reverse, then it must be a tranny (or shifter) problem.
Have you been doing reverse doughnuts?
They DESTROY automatics and arent good for manuals either because of the weak syncro.

Does the shifter shake when it happens?
If it is, you might have a problem with the reverse gate.
Saw it happen to a jetta. It was funny

Does it horribly shake? Does it do it in drive, too, while stopped?

Cars get shaky and noisy and start rattling after a few years, so its only normal.

Mine was doing that too and I found it was a cable hitting against the hood from the bottom. It could be just some interior panels shaking.

I guess its not worth it to change engine mounts or anything.

Try to locate the source of the noise, or just drive around with it and it might stop doing that (happens to my car all the time).

There are very few gearboxes anywhere in the world that have a synchro on reverse... My car does exactly the same thing, and it is the clutch slipping... why it doesnt happen in any forward gears has me stuffed????

If it doesnt happen in the other gears it cant be the clutch slipping.
The same clutch does the same thing everytime you push in the clutch pedal.

it only happens on reverse when the clutch is halfly extended. It doesn't happen when the clutch is not totally released.

in our 85 sr5 it would violently shake the car and shifter when you started engaging 1st gear, but once the car gained momentum it would stop. it also shook in second gear slightly when engaging but non in the other gears. what caused that?
