When did corolla's stop making that flapper piece that is inside the filler neck? Someone said that flapper piece was to prevent gas fumes escaping...I doubt that was the reason since it appears newer corollas don't have the flapper.

I think you've solved your own problem. I'm quite sure there was one installed. It probably came off and has lodged itself further down inside the neck. It was origanally installed to prevent accidental contamination of the fuel tank.

I don;t think the 2000 had a flapper. I visited Toyota dealer but they didn't have any 2000...only 2001 and above and they all did not have the flapper piece. Does anyone have a 2000 so they can tell me if it has the flapper piece?

That seems strange, because I'm quite sure every car I've owned has had one, including my 03 rolla.
