Everything is stock 2dr FWD hatchback, I have had this car since 98, but hadn't driven it since Feb 02 (loss of License) Rebuilt motor, but fails emissions, tried damn near everything, but can't figure it out, so thinkin' of doing a swap. I have the stock 5 speed tranny, and am wondering, if I pick up an AE86 motor, remember this conversion would now be to fuel injected and still the stock tranny, how hard of a conversion am I lookin' at? And where would be a good, inexpensive place to pick up parts? I got kids to feed as well, so I gotta dump the money in it slowly.
If your car has a carburetor, you have a Corolla FX. FX16 is the model with the 16 valve 4A-GE engine.
Going from a 4A-C to a 4A-GE is difficult. The engine mouting and all that is probably farily straight forward, but you'll need the wiring, ECU and minimum a fuel pump and the fuel lines from the gas tank from the fuel injected FX16 along with the engine.
Probably one of your biggest challenge is finding the donor car/motor. A 4A-GE motor isn't the easiest thing to find these days. Also you need one that's for your FWD transverse mount chassis. FX16s were pretty rare to begin with.
The 1st gen MR2 4A-GE motor may work as that was also transverse mount, but those cars are about as rare.
You probably have a better luck of finding a complete car for sale for a reasonable price.

It's the 4ALC motor from what I can tell, but it is definately 16 valve. I found a motor on E-Bay for a decent price. 4AGE motor from an MR2, that's what I was thinkin' of doing. It comes with motor, tranny, ECU, Distributor, pretty much the entire engine, just have to get the fuel lines and such. Also I have the front Disc, rear drum, how seriously would I have to consider swaping to all drum. I am not to heart sent on racing, but just like a boost in the power. I love this car, comfy, and kinda grew on me. I am just having bad luck wit my current motor since it sat so long, it doesn't see to want to run again, first had misfire, mostly fixed that, the ran rich, fixed that, now just flat fails emissions by like 6 times the legal limit on HC's and CO2's at 2500, but damn near perfect at idle.
So we came across a stroke of luck, a car just got sent to the junk yard, my friend was there when it happened, and the guy dropping it off was bitching about just rebuilding the motor 3 weeks ago, 87 Corolla FX with 2Brl Carb 4ALC motor, so we are picking it up to tied me over, but I think I am gonna try and peice together a GTS, lemme have some input as to best ideas...Thanx everyone.
OK, so luck can only go so far, for clarity, it is just the FX, not the FX-16; however, the Carb, Motor, Distributor, fuel pump, and fuel filter have all been swapped. It is still missin' like 1 out of every four strokes, which it was doing before. We straight piped past the cat, and it still does the same thing, so it is not a back pressure issue. Timing is good, and being that it is only 1 out of every four strokes on average, I am leaning away from sticky valve, and more towards vacuum, even though the vacuums all test good. Any suggestions, or anyone know where I can get a 4ALC vacuum diagram, the one in Chiltons and Haynes isn't the detailed.
