AE92 Who has upgraded their rear speakers?

I just made an attempt today at installing Infinty Kappa 52.7i's (5 1/4s) in the rear deck of my 1991 Corolla SR5. I managed to strip down the rear deck of the speakers, carpet, light, etc. However, my kappas do not fit inside the plastic mounting the original speakers were screwed to. Who here has upgraded their rear speakers in their AE92 and how did you do it? All stories welcome and the more detail the better! Thanks!

get some spacers. very easy to install if you dont mind having them sticking up, you barely notice them anyway. i did mine for 6x9's but round ones should be just as easy. or you can cut into the metal in the parcel tray but you can run into some trouble with the law here where i am by doing that.

In the sr5 there is little space at the back so a box is hard to put in. I just bought standard 6x9 mounts for a audio shop then I cut into the cardboard tray and used speaker mounting clips to screw into. I was able to fit 6x9 in the rear. But the mounts were also to big so i had to cut them and the plastic cover for the trunk release to get these big suckers in.

SR5s are easier to upgrade than the GTS speakers.. the rears are a pain in the ASS! since the rear covers actually clip on to the speaker itself. it's one of those things that I would love to smack the dumbass engineer that thought of this one..

On my tercel I mounted a board to underside of speaker shelf and mounted 6x9's to the board. I have an acoustcally transparent material on top of the shelf so no speakers show. Looks very stock until trunk is opened.

I cut out the 6" holes in the metal to fit 6x9's in my AE102. Just used a dremel and cut to fit, then installed the oem rear deck panel over them.

Gasman, what type of spacer did you use? Just a basic 6x9 stand? Where did you attach it to the car?

got my custom pods on the front doors and placed the tweets in the A-pillars which eliminated the need for rear speakers

You should always be sure to make sure speakers fit before you buy them, unless you are prepared to fab some mounts.
Its not too hard, but it's easier just to buy the right size speakers.

you can use this to check compatibility.

This is one of the fosgates in the back of my AE91.
It fits perfectly in the stock location.
It fits under the stock enclosure with no problem.

Fuk this.. I'm getting me a dremel.. I'm sick of OEM speakers on the back.. I'm thinking of installing dual 8" subs on the back.

You shouldnt eliminate the rear mids.
Just make sure you get the right size speakers.
I have done several installs in friends' cars, and one snafoo aside, they always take less than 30 minutes for speaker swaps and about 1-2 hours for installs including subs and an amplifier (since you usually need to run wires).
As long as you do your homework beforehand, its simple.

Ren: You're rears are 5.25" and your fronts are 4".
Rears -

Fronts -

You can also just put a box in the trunk, instead of making custom floating mounts.
I know for a fact that a double 12" box will fit in the trunk of a '90 AE91 (since i made one for my car) so it will probably fit in yours as well.

You will get much better sound if you retain the stock 4 speaker locations and add a sub box.

Speedball, you have a sedan not a coupe, the sedans have normal 5 1/4" mountings in the back like you've demonstrated. However, the coupes have a very unorthodox mounting method, that is slightly smaller than a 5 1/4 but no compatability website knows of it (go check cardomain or crutchfield). Even if the 5 1/4s were able to be stuffed into the mouting bracket in the coupes, the speaker covers over them would not mount in because the clips that hold the speaker covers on are inside the stock speaker, so it's a double-failure. REN and I both thought 5 1/4s thinking they would fit and have learned otherwise. The only way to make everything work well is to make some sort of custom mounting....so why not 6x9s right?
