When I turn it on in the morning and shift into reverse, there is a loud sound as it switches gear into reverse.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? I am suspecting that when the car is left overnight, the engine has a high rpm when first started, then the rpm would drop after it warms up.
but I don't know if this is normal or not. thanks for your help.
Yes, it idles around 1400-1500, then drops once it warms up. When I put it into reverse at or around this rpm, it makes a noticeable clanking noise - something like when you park up or downhill with an automatic and you try to shift.
my friends toyota truck does it but its like 10 years old. and it is a manual. does it take some force to shift it into reverse too or does it just shift normally and make a sound?

sounds like your clutch isn't engaged enough. Are you pushing the clutch to the floor when going into reverse? My car does the EXACT same thing, and I need a new clutch.

my 1993 corolla has the same problem. When i asked on of my friend he said that i need to put some cleaning liquid (dont remember exactly the name) when the gas tank is full. This helps to inject sufficient amount of fuel into the engine ( ibelive). I havent tried it but i will let u know the results after i do that.
My '99 Corolla has been doing it since I bought it new. I think it's normal.
To avoid the noise/clunking, I put it in 1st gear first, and then in reverse.
