Loud sound when shift into reverse

I just got a 2004 corolla with 31K miles on it.

When I turn it on in the morning and shift into reverse, there is a loud sound as it switches gear into reverse.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I am suspecting that when the car is left overnight, the engine has a high rpm when first started, then the rpm would drop after it warms up.

but I don't know if this is normal or not. thanks for your help.

is your car manual or auto? Can you give a description of the noise?
it should idle higher at 1st then drop down to 600-800, somewhere in that range

5speed manual. corolla S.

Yes, it idles around 1400-1500, then drops once it warms up. When I put it into reverse at or around this rpm, it makes a noticeable clanking noise - something like when you park up or downhill with an automatic and you try to shift.

I just wanted to know if this is normal.

my friends toyota truck does it but its like 10 years old. and it is a manual. does it take some force to shift it into reverse too or does it just shift normally and make a sound?

Does the noise occur when moving the shifter into gear or when you release the clutch?

a noise is normal, because you're moving the sprocket into place, reverse sprocket moves, others do not.

try this....start it up, make sure the car isn't moving, put it in 1st gear then go to reverse, should go in smoothly.

sounds like your clutch isn't engaged enough. Are you pushing the clutch to the floor when going into reverse? My car does the EXACT same thing, and I need a new clutch.

i hope he doesn't need a new clutch with 31K. If so he would need an automatic before a clutch

Well.. if the car was previously owned by a 5spd newb.. chances are that clutch or the synchros are deader than a skunk on the highway.

noise

hi,

my 1993 corolla has the same problem. When i asked on of my friend he said that i need to put some cleaning liquid (dont remember exactly the name) when the gas tank is full. This helps to inject sufficient amount of fuel into the engine ( ibelive). I havent tried it but i will let u know the results after i do that.

My '99 Corolla has been doing it since I bought it new. I think it's normal.
To avoid the noise/clunking, I put it in 1st gear first, and then in reverse.
