Corolla AE110 Consumes too much gas!

Hi,

I bought a used Toyota Corolla AE110 Automatic 1997 model in Nairobi, Kenya. I have realised that the car is not fuel efficient. It is currently doing 9.5 km per litre of gasoline. I have changed air filters and spark plugs and the vehicle appears to be burning fuel well. I have heard from mechanics that I need to adjust automatic gear cable. Another one is telling me that I need to change the fuel filter and tune the car. I am a bit confused and do not know what to do.

Change the fuel filter and tune up the car.. that means air filter, spark plugs, maybe wires, maybe the cap and rotor.

I have done that bu no change experienced. It is an Automatic machine. Anything else? Do you think it can do better than 10 kilometres to the litre?

For sure it can do a little better than that, I usually get about 500km per tank but that's highway driving, city driving... I'm lucky to get about 300km, it always depends how you drive.
