Angry Ugh! Brake job on an 05 XRS??

Just got back from the dealership for my 32,000 service and they said I need significant brake service because my calipers and slider were sticking (because the brakes are badly rusted) so they have to machine the rear rotors, re/re calipers and slider, and adjust. And the e-brake too...

Right from almost day one - I noticed that the after disengaging the e-brake and backing out of my spot in the morning, I would get a little "pop" from either rear wheel. Figured it was normal since other car's I've had would do something similar.

2.6 hours labour cost!! ($275)

WTF!? Rusted disk brakes with a year of service??!!

Anyone have similar issues?

I'm pissed. My Celica GTS never had the shit I've had to deal with with on this car. Give me "JT" VIN vehicles over anything else!!

they wouldn't warranty any of that? insane. that labor cost is crazy...brake jobs are easy. especially disks. the longest part of any brake job i've done is turning the rotors.

Yeah, but not on our S, but on our old Olds 88 - seems as if once a year, it needs new rotors/calipers, rotors warp a few times per year - I can't wait to get rid of this pos, but, twas my dad's, and my wife says "as long as he's still alive, we HAVE to keep it"
Lucky, lucky me And don't get me started on the coil pack/icm problems. It's going to be a long time before I even entertain the idea of buying a "domestic" auto. I've had a '75 Celica ST, and then a '91 Tercel DX, and now an '05 Corolla S.....and in those 30 years, I think I spent less on repairs than I have in the 4 years or so that we've been "blessed" with the Oldmansmobile so chances are we'll have another Toyota once the Olds gives up the ghost...

great.. makes me wanna buy an XRS even more..

You're right though.. I'll take JT vins over anything made down here.. quality is a little higher than north american cars but I still don't trust any company that makes parts for the cars built down here.

At the 9th gen corolla site (WTF?? does not let me type a URL. Changes it to *s), there are many XRSs that have crossed the 40k miles (not even KM) mark and they had no such issues. Mine is still at only 11,500 KMs yet so I cannot speak for myself.

rolla-XRS,

If you live in the Snow/Salt belt, I'd say your problem with rear disc brakes is not that abnormal. Here in Quebec, we hear of that often and not necessary on old cars.

Rear disc brake pistons move very little in the sliders compared to front discs because of their much smaller size and the small amount of force needed to stop a FWD car. So they tend to jam and rust easily if the sliders are not repacked with grease twice per year.

Because of this, I much prefer to have a FWD car with rear drum brakes. Not very glamorous but they can go almost for the life of the car with hardly any maintenance.

I know they do look silly with 18" alloys though...

the pop is normal the first time you stop from reverse, then drive,, its the pads shifting on the clips. its a self cleaning mechanism

I'd say that something is up there. Have you got all the neigbourhood cats pissing on your wheels or what??? That really corrodes the fuck out of things in a hurry, not to mention leave a smell that'll clean out your sinisus real good. I wouldn't let Toyota off the hook unless you are not telling us everything.... I replaced the brakes on my 91 SR5 4x4 with factory Toyota stuff cause the original Toyota stuff lasted for 14 years & 300K without a single pad replacement even. Pretty cool when you can wear out 3 sets of tires and still have the original brake pads. You must be missing something.......
