1987 Corolla carburetor trouble

I'm trying to revive an '87 Corolla FX that has been sitting for a while. After replacing the fuel filter, and rebuilding the top half of the carburetor, the car starts up and purrs like a kitten until you open the choke. then it dies.

Also, when you press on the gas it sounds like air is rushing into something. I think there is a vacuum leak somewhere. I've already replaced a colapsed hose and a cracked hose...but haven't found anything else.

Anyone else had this problem?

UPDATE: so when you turn the car on...it revs up and down...about a dozen times and then cuts off. if you open the throttle it dies instantly. It seems like a vacuum problem, but I don't know what other hoses to check.
