I hit lift today multiple times and did not feel the impact that I usaully do (i.e., pushed back into the seat).
The car still feels fast but I just didnt feel that big difference when hitting lift.
Anyone have the same experience?
Your car isn't completely broken in. I have 31,000 miles on my xrs and i am sure that once it was completely broken in (10,000 miles or so) it was faster and smoother then when it had around 5,000-9,000 miles.
Does the Corolla XRS engine have the updated lift bolts? Celica and Matrix owners had a problem with the lift bolts breaking. Search for "lift bolts" on the Matrix and Celica forums...

My XRS has 12,000 KM now and lift kicks in as strong as it did in the begining. I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic at 8000 KM and then started using Octane 94 a few months ago. I do agree that when it is really hot, the performance is bound to suffer since warm air to oil mixture does not compress in the cylinders as well as cold air and oil mixture. Therefore, hot weather does take it's toll.
p.s. Get your clutch checked. I think your clutch is probably fried and it slips a lot when you hit rpms, which results in power loss.

I havnt switched to synthetic and I am still not sure if I will. The clutch feels ok.
I can feel that the car needs to breath more and I am going to go buy a trd air filter tomorrow (I hope its good since it costs $90 canadian).
I also noticed a lot of people on here recommending 94 octane so I think I will give that a try.
Aside from air filter and exhaust... what other options do I have from trd for engine performance?

It was more the Celicas that were affected pre-2002. There was a TSB that was issued. So, it's pretty much a non-issue for the Matrix and Corolla XRS'.
I noticed a substantial difference between Octane 91 and 94. Not a big one, but it is there definitely a difference since higher octane is a lot more combustible in a high compression engine and does not get hot as easily as lower octane fuel does.
Synthetic oil makes the car very smooth and car is much more happy with it.
As for aftermarket, don't rely on TRD. All the XRS owners are going with aftermarket companies and getting really good gains from them. You will have to go with Injen intake (Magnaflow for 04/03 Matrix XRS fits perfectly) and get the Corolla XRS magnaflow exhaust that just came out this month. The stock intake is very restrictive and you easily gain 13 whp (15 - 17 HP at the crank) with Injen. The full catback exhaust will give around 5 - 7 whp (9 - 11 HP at the crank).
Two Corolla XRS owners (JCTurbo) and auto techs have built a Master Tech lift controller for the 2ZZ GE engine (applies to Corolla, Matrix XRS, Celica and Lotus Elise) that will allow lift to engage at the best point, which is 6000 rpm (anything lower would be a power loss). This will gain HP and torque as well at high rpms. Expect dynos and videos soon with the various lift engagment points.

Higher octane is actually LESS combustable. Which is why it can be used in higher compression engines.

I have to keep into consideration my toyota warranty, I am planning on keeping this car for a long time.
Most of the people (including myself) plan to keep it for a long time. There is no other choice. TRD is not going to do anything while other aftermarket companies will come out with tons of stuff in the while for the 2ZZ engine. The mods that I mentioned generally never lead to anything bad happening to the engine. The warranty is not voided for just putting the stuff on. As a matter of fact, TRD outsources the manufacturing of it's intake and exhausts to other company. I have seen AEM intakes and Magnaflow exhausts at my local TRD dealership. It is only a problem if any of the mods lead to a problem in the engine, which is highly unlikely with basic mods like intakes and exhausts etc. Lift controller is still being tested so not sure about the after effects of that.
