If you're looking to buy a new Corolla and want the most fuel efficiency, demand a diesel. Toyota makes them in Europe. It drives me nuts that we can't get them here. 50-60 mpg...who wouldn't want that?! Volkswagon (overpriced/unreliable) sells diesels here, why no one else? I seriously think it's our "big oil" gov't. Forget about waiting for hybrids...diesels are here now, we just have to get them over to the states.
hybrid is the future
diesel stink and sounds terrible
Like you said Hybrid is he future but it doesnt do us any good right now. Diesels are readily available and could be implemented in the US alot sooner.
And as far as being loud have you heard the new Cummins diesel in the Dodge trucks. At idle you hardly even know it is diesel.

yeah thats only because the diesel is pretty much raw over here, when I went to portugal last year, the diesels are so high tech, low emission, they just smell a bit, but they don't puff the black smoke (the trucks yes but cars no) the diesel is more developed over the to save the enviroment.

I'm considering a diesel as my next car and keep the rolla as a toy.... I like the diesel torque and with a turbo its great to tune.
You want more boost, sure, just add pressure and adjust some more diesel feed. Diesels are cool because they dont detonate, because diesel is injected directly to the combustion chamber when the air charge is compressed. The compression ratio is ridiculous, 18:1-25:1 normally, even some more higher ones have been made. There is no throttle plates, no stuff to restrict airflow, you get maximum amount of air in the engine all the time, amount of fuel is varied by the throttle.... and best of all, you dont need a BOV so the turbo keeps spooled and the intake pressure is relative just to the rpm level....
Still think diesels suck
In Malta diesels are as common or more common than petrol cars, and yes they got some serious acceleration. We have some GOLF 19TDi that really haul ass. But I don't like the sound and rev range of a diesel.
I myself always stick to petrol and I believe the first solution into new fuel sources is Hybrid technology - of which Toyota's Hybrid and related technologies seem to be the best (the regenerative braking system just blows me away...)

neither diesel or hybrid cars are the future...they are a temporary band-aid untill the oil companies loosen their strangle hold on the automotive market and the government and allows some advancement in hydrogen technology. fossil fuels of any form are in no way the future.

that is why i said the first solution in the future of fuel sources, coz it addresses an intermediate approach till a total change is made. Fuel cells and hydrogen vehicles seem to be the most promising and already have been partly implemented on some transport systems.
Also in malta, currently Bio Diesel is taking a boost + aiding malta's pollution problem, since malta is an economy based on tourism, we consume LOTS of oils and fats for maltese and meditarranean dishes, for ourselves, and tourists, these could all help drive the many diesel cars in malta.
