2000 to 2002 only ones with timing chains????

After doing some searching this is what I come up with, but find it sort of unusual. Was this an *experiment* by Toyota?? Usually they're all about belts, aren't they???

Reason I ask is I'm now looking at a good used Corolla and while '98/'99 seemed to be good too, I googled quite a few probs w/ those years. Apparently prior & after are good selections for a Corolla.

The chain has been on every Corolla of every model year since the year 2000. No more belts.

Actually since 1998 when they first started putting the 1zzfe into the corolla.

As for the reason of going to chains Toyota is doing everything they can do to bring down the maintance needed on the car and since if you get technical about it Timing chains don't need to be replaced. Of course in reality they do but when they need to be replaced it doesn't have to be replaced for about 120-150K miles compared to Timing belts that need to be replaced every 60-80K miles. Toyota also has a whole bunch of new things like 100K mile coolant now, most engines come wiht iridium plugs that last 120K miles, they have new cv boots that are garunteed to not tear, automatic tranny fluid that doesn't need changed anymore(infact the new solaras don't even come with dipsticks). That is another reason why Toyota is one of the best selling cars in on the planet because they are always trying to find ways to save the consumer. Of course it hurts the technicians since they are basically there for just warrenty and oil changes now which in about 5-10 years auto technicians will have to be paid in salary just to keep them there but that is a different topic that I wont get started on.

My old '88 4Runner had a timing chain and it did have to be replaced (though not til 330000km).

It eventually wore so much slack into it, it wore through the guides and started contacting the timing chain cover wall. It eventually ate through it and allowed coolant to mix with the oil.

All R series engines had timing chains on them. Those were made to need to be replaced though. The newer ones are made in the mind of not having to be replaced but like I Said in reality the chain is going to develop slack in it and need to be replaced but timing chains don't need to be replaced as much as timing belts thus cutting the cost of maintance down.

Yes, but my point was that I think they went back to belts in '03????

And, yes, my infamous '94 pickup had a chain on it and while it had 175,000 miles on it, I could hear that chain every time I started it. (though it didn't make noise after startup, so I don't know that it couldn't go another 50K miles?) Anyway, I came to learn that, yes, those types of chains are *meant* to be replaced.

I think Nissan was the one who started all this (Hey we're better 'cuz we use chains instead of belts like Toyota so you don't have to worry about it......EVER). And, of course, every Nissan dealer/owner I've ever talked to still swears they NEVER need to be changed, but I really don't know the truth on that matter.

What I do know is that I can't believe Honda still makes "interference" engines!! That's gotta be the most stupid thing I've ever heard of. After about 1995 you'd think they'd have woken up, but as far as I can tell.............ALL honda small engines, are still "interference" type. Stupid!!!!!!

My '98 Camry's timing belt started slappin' the guard at about 80,000 miles.........of course I pushed that to about 90,000 'til I changed it............

No Toyota did not go back to timing belts infact I beleive the only motors that still have belts right now is the 2uzfe and the 2jzge. Other then those two motors you can't buy a brand new Toyota, Scion or LExus without it being a timing chain. Infact that is how it was in 2003 as well. Like I keep saying Toyota is going back to timing chains because they want to keep the maintance cost down for there customers. I also believe that Toyota was one of the first imports to go back to the timing chain with the 2rz and 3rz and then the 1zzfe and so on. Nissan doesn't do anything on there own they have to have someone to follow on everything.
