metal scrapping noise from corolla xrs

Hey Guys,

I hear a metal scrapping noise when in a gear and mostly when decelerating. I don't hear the noise at all when rolling in neutral with the clutch disengaged.
I have seen a couple of threads on this subject but none of them actually mention the cause of the problem or how it got fixed. I assume this is common in the xrs at about 10 thousand k's.

Is this related to the clutch or heat sheild?

I believe it's the clutch plate making the noise because the XRS clutch plate uses rubber/plastic nodes rather than the 4 metal springs. Interesting enough I've been told it's the Echo clutch plate. It's the four plastic nodes vibrating around that make this noise...similar to the heat shield. This is what happens when you get a stripped down Celica GTS. There's nothing wrong with it - it's just the way it was designed.

That said, whenever your clutch plate get's burned, replace it with the Celica version using metal springs and you'll be a-okay.

Naah, its just that it seems like people worry too much about sounds, vibration, etc on their cars, even when their cars are relatively new. You have to remember, cars are mechanical things and they wont ever be "quiet". When you've driven cars that are literally almost gonna fall apart on you when you drive you get numbed to things like small noises. Best sounds I've known are when you go 120kph the whole car starts to rattle and body panels start to creak, and you keep on pushing it to 180ish, damn imagine how it feels then...
IMHO the worst mechanical problems are the ones that come silently, like fuelpump failure, never heard it coming, until hte whole dashboard lit up like a christmas tree.

Sorry - should have been more specific. The same stupid plastic springs are on the Echo clutch. Sort of a hybrid...Echo springs + Celica clutch plate = Corolla noise.

The Corolla XRS and Celica GTS clutch plates are different - and they have different part numbers....but the Ceilca clutch is better. Get that when the time is ripe.

31250-12360-84 is the number both the celica and the Corolla, spend some time on New Celica.org and you'll see them complain. the only way to get the sprung clutch is to order the Toyota OE clutch from Japan, or switch to TRD

This noise would sound to me like it is your input shaft bearing, does it do it with the a/c on? i have a c60 with 10,000 miles on it and its doing that too, it doesnt seem to hurt it, but toyota will give you a new tranny as long as your still under warranty.

Humm...I seem to remember a tech telling me that a prior year Celica GTS clutch plate was the one to get. Might have been the 2003 or 2004 clutch. I can't remember right now.
