Need Advice

I Was Considering A New Xrs Corolla And Was Wondering If It Must Use Premium Fuel Or Can I Run Regular. After Reading Some Of These Threads Iam Very Concerned About The Starting Issues.has Toyota Found A Cure For This Problem.aside From Starting Problems What Other Issues Or Problems Are Their With The Xrs/or Corollas In General.i Know The Sales Person Will Not Be Straight Forward And More Likely Not Aware Of Any Problems.i Would Like To Get As Much Info As Possible Before I Decide To Put Down The Money. Thankyou

hi mike's dad, welcome to the forums, premium fuel are only an essential in other high powered cars, how should i say this.....cars that have been turbo charged, some even super charged, or cars that have to deal with a lot of horsepower, such as V8 engines (like ford mustangs). The corolla xrs, in my opinion is just a regular 4 cylinder car, so using premium fuel is not mandatory, you should be fine with the regular unleaded fuel.

According to the sales info I had on Corollas when we were shopping for our S, the XRS required premium - your opinion ??? Yes, it's a 4 cylinder car, but it's not just a "regular" 4 cylinder (that would be the other Corolla models) - Toyota has good reasons for wanting premium to be used - it's a high performance engine (very different from Corolla CE,S,LE, even though all are 1.8L....)

From what I know, the XRS doesn't suffer any starting problems. I typically hear the case in the S, LE, and CE models, but not a word from the XRSers.

The 2ZZGE is a high reving, high compression, engine. It needs the premium fuel and from what I've heard, it can damage the engine if you choose not to use it.

On my own, I have driven the XRS and it is a total dream. The comfort and convenience of a sedan, power more than the common everyday sedan and many of what we call "sport compact" cars, and the reliability of a Toyota. It is faster than the Lexus IS300 a much, much cheaper.

Run at least 91 octane. Toyota has designed their engines to run on the fuel and it's the safest bet to driving the car. However, premium fuel in a common car with common engines is bad for the car and is completely unnecessary.

I was going to ask the same question, in Canada our highest octane is 92, which is supreme ... so you would need to run that?

91 octane is the minimum requirement. 92 should do just fine, as well as anything above.

You shouldn't talk without knowing the facts.. not all 4cyl motors are "regular" motors.. there's way too many high compression motors out there. The 4AGE in my 90 GTS is a high-comp motor, therefore it uses Premium fuel. It will run on regular if its neccessary. For example if you're in the middle of nowhere and all you can buy its regular, but its not adviced to run them on regular for long periods of time.

Not all 4cyl motors are regular.. maybe the north american cars might be, but not all Japanese 4cyl motors.

Not true.. it depends where you are.. in BC and Ontario, we have Sunoco Ultra94 available.

well, i think you've mistaken me, the xrs is really not all that great of an engine to be running 91 octane all the time, meaning the engine is not turbo charged or anything, a turbo charged engine NEEDS high octane fuel, but the xrs is only recommended to have octane, i understand the middle of nowhere part, but there are other 4 cylinders N/A out there that i think NEEDS 91 octane more than the xrs, like perhaps the acura rsx or lsx that handles about 200 hp, while the xrs only has about 170-ish hp, remember these are non-turbos, i hope you know where i'm getting at, this topic can well be debatable for years, but i feel premium fuel is only a RECOMMENDED for the xrs if you're low on budget, otherwise if you're a really rich xrs owner, then go for the premium fuel becuz it runs cleaner than regular unleaded, thats toyota's plan, the xrs dont NEED premium, you see my point now? xrs owners should be fine either way, premium or not
