Well as for your MAF sensor, I'd say don't worry about it. I don't know exactly where it's located on a Corolla, but on my Ford truck you can see it by looking down the intake between the air cleaner and the throttle body itself. I've cleaned mine a couple times...........

(you'll hear different folks tell you use ONLY non-residue brake cleaner, electrical contact cleaner, do use windex, don't use windex, etc. etc.)

.........FWIW, I use non-residue (it'll say it on the can) brake cleaner. When you look in your intake, you'll see a couple wires that look like tiny guitar strings. Spray 'em. Wait a minute or two and then spray 'em again. (Go ahead & really get 'em good). I prefer to not use a Qtip or any of that crap 'cuz breaking one of 'em means a good chunk of money (min $100).

Anyway, although I've cleaned mine a couple times, I don't know that it honestly does much. I was recently told by a mechanic that because the wires are temp sensitive sensors, they pretty much burn off anything that could prevent them from doing their job. IOW, you might help if you live in rural USA and have a lot of dust/dirt, but might be just as well leaving it alone.

My .02!

(My opnion on spark plugs is good old-fashioned OEM plugs. Pull out whatever was in there.....NGK, Bosch, etc. and put the same kind right back in.)

I agree fully with redgtxdi, except that sometimes with age the buildup on the MAF sensor will acumulate and it's worth a look. If you can see the gunk, Clean it.

I use contact cleaner meant for PCB's and industrial electronics.

I had my MAF sensor replaced at 66000 KM .. the MAF sensor was completely dead.. after I cleaned it...

if the MAF is dead, it'll throw a code saying running to lean.. you'll also have problems going over 3000 RPM. MAF sensor is right by the airbox, on the side closer to the brake module.. it should be a plastic thing held down by 2 phillips screws.

I changed my sparkplugs at 60000 KM .. you don't really need to do it till about 192000 KM (recommended by dealer).

alot of people have had success cleaning them when the too lean code was present so I wouldnt assume its dead until its cleaned. sometimes it has taken two or three cleanings before they started working properly again. in my case it didnt work and I did have to buy a new one but for most people the cleanings do work. good luck.

p1171 System too lean. You will get a check engine light if you mass air flow is bad.

2001 having hesitation problems on first application of throttle, sounds like MAF sensor failure.

-no CEL (should i have someone hook it up to a scanner anyways?)
-new plugs
-cleaned MAF sensor
-tested sensor according to Haynes manual

still no improvement.

any advice?

should i get the dealer involved?

TIA
