AE92 1992 DX fuel economy

Is there any way to further boost the car's MPG? My mom says she fills up every week, last I checked she gets 25mpg. Anything I could tweak to further up that number?

If that's all city driving then it's not too bad but a good tune up, proper tire pressure, an alignment, and a clean fuel system. Try some Berrymans B12 Chemtool, it comes in a metal can and costs close to $9 but it works great.

when you look for an airfilter....try a K&N......they'll last ya a lifetime....and will give a few extra horses and a bit better mileage.....espec if it's part highway......

Chris

I'll be getting one for my 92 all trac......might make a bit of diff in the winter with a few extra horses in the snow.....

We're just using a Fram filter, it isn't really such a great car and I regularly clean the filter anyway.

Also, the tires seem to constantly need attention (losing air?). Goodyear Integrity wasn't such a good choice but it was cheap.

What is Berrymans? Also, what spark plugs do you recommend? I don't think they have been changed. Will do brake drums on the weekend if I am not busy. Usually a tune up consists of what? I'm more diesel-inclined, please educate me. Thanks!

Berrymans is a total fuel system cleaner and it works wonders. My wife had a Nissan minivan that would knock and ping with 89 octane but was designed to use 87. It took two treatments but it got the job done and totally got rid of the pinging. I tried many other brands before that and none of them worked. You should also get some throttle body cleaner (don't use carb cleaner as some throttle bodies have a coting on them that carb cleaner will destroy) and spray it at the throttle body with the engine running. You'll need to work the throttle by hand because the engine will want to die from the extra fuel. As far as the tune up go get a Haynes or Chilton manual but includes plugs, wires, cap and rotor, timing adjustment, unrestricted fuel delivery, and unrestricted air flow. Hope that helps.

Had to bump this thread up, I just computed the Corolla's mileage and it's down to 20MPG. What exactly is a tune up? Is there such a thing as a valve adjustment on this car (4AFE engine)?

Would a stretched throttle cable affect mileage? Cable has stretched a bit, if I manually turn the throttle lever on the throttle body the cable does not return all the way back and instead has a small part that's kinked.
