Oh wait, did you mean the Corolla S? In that case, the engine, tranny, and suspension are different. The XRS has 170hp and the S has 130 or whatever. The XRS also has a 6-speed, and some different body and interior items and suspension.
There is no Corolla Type S. That designation is used by Honda for its RS-Xs and 3.2TLs/CLs to denote the performance model.
You are referrring to a Corolla S. It's just basically a Corolla with the aero stuff and slightly different trim. The XRS is 6-speed only, AFAIK. If it's for the wife, and she doesn't drive standard, speed is probably not high on her priority list, no? An S should be just fine, as it looks like an XRS, save for the smaller wheels (XRS has 16s).

I test drove the Corolla S, then had the XRS ordered. The S looks nice but is as slow as sin, even supercharged with the TRD blower it is not as fast as the XRS. The XRS motor is a work of art, allowing the owner to get 34+mpg if they take it easy, or smoke any FWD 4 banger short of the Acura RSX type S when you are in the mood. The XRS also has a much nicer interior. Most "tuners" who get the Corolla S spend thousands of dollars and still don't have as quick a car as the XRS is. I say most because there are some exceptions to the rule, but the stock Corolla motor is not much to work with.
There is a huge difference between the S and the XRS. The S is all show and no go. So if you want to look fast but be slow get the S....
Got SR in front of my DX gives me about 12, plus those mud flaps help my aerodynamics.
You know special release, it's the shit, now I have 102hp on my 4af carb machine. Plus the K&N ya know it gave me 5. LOL

Nah.. the TYPE R sticker gives you 5hp.. The TYPE S only gives you 2hp.
only 2hp on the corolla? it gives my car 40hp
back on topic, the XRS only comes in 6spd, but if she can drive 6spd, i'd say it's definitely worth it. If teh XRS was out back when i got my RSX, i woulda definitely sprung for that instead of the base RSX.
