'90 manual tranny question

So I replaced my drivers side CV axle a while back, and noticed that where the axle enters the tranny, there is a LOT of slop there. You can push the engine side CV joint all around. It's as if the bearing in the tranny is very worn down. I didn't notice if the old one did the same thing, but I assume so, since the oil seal also was terribly worn and had to be pulled and replaced with a new one (it had been leaking). Is this a common thing? is there a fix for it, or must the whole thing be pulled and replaced/rebuilt? it still drives okay, but it clunks a bit when you go around a corner at just the right speed. I can't imagine that it's good for the car...

That sounds bad man. The FSM is being shipped to my house from eBay right now, I'll hit you on BC when I know for sure.
