Need some serious help-- electrical!

Hi everybody, I just bought a 1997 Corolla yesterday that was a repo. I don't know much about it's history, except that the lady who owned it voluntarily gave it up- it doesn't run. Underneath the hood, the wire that goes from the starter to the battery is burned, and the nearest wire harness a little melted. Do I need to get a whole new wire harness for the engine compartment, or can I just have the wires replaced that look bad? Can anybody give me a link to some more information about how to go about fixing these problems? Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

most likely the starter is fried, as to replacing the wires gently unravel the loom and inspect the wires and more closely asses the damage, it may be easier to swap the harness and it may not really depends on the damage, if its just the main power feed thats buggered than change that, one you get into replacing all kinds of EFI wiring you can bet the joints will come back to haunt you later...
