Exclamation car died on highway

ok...i have a 1993...and i felt some acceleration problems this morning...when i was at a light i heard some knocking/vibration noises coming from my engine...i revved it up to about 3k rpm then nothing...no noises....but as i was on the on-ramp onto the highway..there was a major acceleration problem...i put in from 4th into 3rd...and the problem was still there...so i took my time getting onto the highway...but after driving on the highway for about 2.5 miles...my car started to bog...i put it from 5th into 4th..but still, no acceleration..about 1 mile after that i threw it into nuetral and the rpm dropped and it died on the highway....luckily it started back up...then i got off the highway and checked it out...there was a click/click/click/click/click/click noise coming from inside the motor...i turned it off then back on....it ran, but only at about 200rpm it normally ran at 900rpm... so i thought i could make it to school....but after a hill it died again...now it wont start...whats wrong...is it my spark plugs/wires...or ignition coil?? or something else...

check your battery, same thing kinda happened to me and it turned out to be a bad alternator, thus resulting in a dead battery, have your alternator and battery checked at ur local car shop, im pretty sure they wont charge you anything, good luck man

chadi,
What model engine does your 1993 have? We hear all these things about "non-interference" engines but your friend says that a piston is hitting a valve.

Ya I don't think it is the piston hitting the valve, did the car overheat at all, I think it may be the head.

When was the last time sparks and wires were replaced? Don't think it's that, usaully they don't go to the point of the car shits the bed, I had an acceleration problem in my old car, like you discribed, was fixed with sparks and wires. Although the car still ran before that.
