since geo prizms have the same engine as the toyota corolla, i decided to come here for some help.
the cooling fan on a 1995 geo prizm we have is constantly running, even if the engine is cool. we've changed the temp sensor and the cooling fan switch. it still runs, what's the prob? can anyone help?
The prizm doesn't just have the same motor as the Corolla.. they're the same car with different looks to make them different.
btw, don't expect a reply in 20mins. It will take at least a few hours before someone who has experienced the same thing replies. I've had that happen to me but it was the temp sensor. Change the thermostat too.. maybe the car really is overheating and its not just the fan or switches acting up.

i've waited a couple days now. i have tried a geo forum, they're not much help. from what i've researched, the 95 prizm and the 95 corolla do have the same engine, all the engine parts in our prizm have TOYOTA stamped on them.......so i decided i could try asking you guys for help......sorry if it's an inconvenience. i'll try the thermostat. i don't think the car is really over heating because when i start it up in the morning, it just runs, for no reason. thanx for the help.
Nobody said it was an inconvenience.. and as for the 20min thing.. I thought you posted the same day within 20mins didn't realize till after that you had posted the day after almost at the same time. I had 2 teeth taken out today so the pain was getting to me.
Try the thermostat.. it's probably stuck and the fan is just trying to keep the engine cool.. could be the rad too, push the fins on the rad, if they go right in without any effort then its time for a new rad.
Like I said, the Corolla and the Prizm are the same car.. the Prizm is basically a rebadged Corolla with different bits here and there, but they're both made at the same plant.
fins on radiator...huh? so does the radiator effect the cooling fan?
Yeah.. the fins (little metal leafs on the rad) if you push them and the basically come right off, the rad is dead and of course the fan stays on all the time, because the rad doesn't cool the motor properly anymore.
but what if the motor is cool......like when i start it up in the morning, the engine is cold, the radiator doesn't work when it's cold, but the fan just runs.
No, but the ECT will pick up the temperature of it, and if that reads high the fan will come on. If the ECT wire is shorted with another wire or power, the fan will turn on.
Quote:
There will be 2 wires I believe from the ECT sensor which should be located on or near the thermostat which should be at the end of the top radiator hose which connects to the radiator on top. One will be 5volts at all times and the other one should be less, like at least half that.
Hm... looks like everything here is covered already.
If the fan relay is fine and the radiator is fine, and you've changed the temp sensor, just check the voltage on those ECT wires, and if that is fine, just take it to a shop.
