AC Question - reduced output

I asked this a while ago but didn't get any responses, so I'm going to try again. I have a '95 wagon. The AC blows very cold, but after about 15 minutes, the amount of air it is putting out starts to reduce. After a while, even with the fan on high, there is barely any air coming out, and in certain conditions, you can see condensation/vapor blowing into the car. If you turn the AC off for a while, the fan continues to blow very cold air, and the volume of air increases again. Then, turn the AC back on, and it repeats. It works the same on fresh or recirculate.

Any idea what this could be? Seems to me that maybe something is freezing up & not allowing air through?

Thanks - Jevid

It definitely sounds like the aircon compressor is not cycling off when it should to prevent overcooling, which causes the build up of ice on the evaporator, thus restricting airflow, also known as "freezing up"... I can't say I've had any experience at this (my original R-12 system is still factory sealed and working fine <<knocking on wood!>>), and I've seen many home aircon units freeze up.... my first instinct is to blame a faulty A/C amplifier.... I'm curious to see what the problem is.... I have the factory '93 service manual in pdf format, so I can see about e-mailing you the aircon section in parts if you'd like.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. Well, the car came with a 3 month 100% warantee, so I won't have to pay to have it fixed - or attempt to fix it myself, which is good. I just wanted to have some back up information for when I talk to the seller. I had guessed that something like your description of the problem was what was happening; it seems to make sense. I'm going to call the seller today & arrange for a repair. I'll try and remember to post back here when it gets fixed.

Again, thanks for your help!
