94 Corolla loose axle at transmission

The passenger side axle has a lot of play in it where it enters the transmission. This is causing an oil leak. It does not appear that there is a bearing or bushing that can be replaced without removing & disassembling the transmission. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks, Bert

I have the same problem as well. Do you have a knocking as well or is it just loose? I replaced the axle and there is still some play. When i start to brake i get a little knocking or if i turn the wheel i can hear something rubbing.

bertherr,
The end of axel is removed and installed in the transmission by pounding it in with a brass bar and a hammer. There are no nuts and bolts involved. There is a washer-like thing near the end of the axle that seems to aid in locking the axel in place. I think if that end of your axel is lose (slips in an out of the transmission case) you need to have it pounded back in. There can still be leaks after an axle is firmly seated due to the seals in the transmission itself. I have no experience in replacing those.

If this is an automatic, you will be pounding it into the differential, not to the transmission proper. And you should check the fluid level in the differential since in an automatic, this is a separate compartment than the transmission (see if it has a separate drain plug).

The axle is not loose in an "in and out" fashion. It has way too much play in it in a radially. I had the seal replaced but, it still leaks quite a bit. I am surprised that I do not get a vibration from it. This same axles inner cv joint went bad and was replced not too long ago. It did vibrate when the cv joint was bad. There was never any knocking. I am wondering if there is a replacable part to fix this (bearing or bushing inside) or could the transmission's case just be worn out. Thanks, Bert

No. The main issue here is what has worn to cause the radial play. The excessive play is causing the shaft seal to not be able to do its job. Thanks, Bert

Let's try to find a diagram of this transmission. Automatic or Manual? 3 speed?

If I end up removing the transmission to repair this problem I will also replace the clutch. Should I get the clutch from Toyota or are there good aftermarket clutches available? The last time I replaced a clutch I used a non OEM clutch. It functioned fine but, I did not like the feel of the pedal. Thanks, Bert

The best photo on the web that I hae found so far is at:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...3Doff%26sa%3DG

Look on page 3, the 7th photo down the page. I think your axels are pounded into the "side gears" of the differential. From diagrams of the differential on 1990 Corollas, it looks like the groves that receive the end of your axel are machined into the side gears. There isn't any kind of bushing or bearing to wear out. On the face of each side gear is a "thrust washer", but I don't think that has grooves to recieve the axle. So I don't understand what can allow any radial free play on the end of the axel unless the side gear is in very bad shape.

I can't advise you about the clutch since I haven't taken apart any transmissions yet.

Edit: Would the side gear wobble in the radial direction if the thrust washer was worn out?
