Rain should not do much to your engine. See if it s missing on one cylinder. Check for spark on all your plug wires.

Was the car running well after the hood was off and before the rain? Or was it untested after the hood came off. Maybe it wasn't the rain that affected the engine. Maybe it was something you might have disconnected accidentally while working around the engine.

Check if air filter has water. Spark plug cylinders might also have water.

Sounds like you got water inside the sparkplug valley

Take off the wires going to the plugs(make sure you remember which one is for which sparkplug) then remove the black cover on top of the the sparkplug valley (should be 6 bolts I think) then if you got a Shopvac vacuum, vacuum the water that's inside until its dry, now let it sit until the moisture dries off and put everything back on. and it should start.

I did something similar except I washed my motor and let it dry off, I figured no water would get in there.. then a couple of days later I tried starting the car and it wouldn't go. I figured the wires must be wet.. so I pulled the first wire out and look inside.. I had about 2inches of water in there. so I did what I explained to you before and the car runs now.

OK, you tested for spark on each plug wire individually, not by testing only one plug ? Did you do this by taking out each plug, Hooking the plug back to the wire, setting the plug on a metal part of the car, cranking and seeing there was spark on the plug? As karugs suggested, you checked that the air filter is dry?

Like Ren69, I've often washed my 4af and 4afe engines, I use a garden hose. But that has not caused me any problem. Is this a 4age, fuel injected?

The engine sounds like a lawnmower. Lawnmower engines are loud. Has the exhaust manifold cracked?

If my 4afe was having this problem and each individual plug wire worked, I would idle the car and hold a pipe or piece of broomstick up to the body of each of the 4 injectors and listen to them. They make a click-click-click sound thst is easy to hear when they fire. I would disconnect the ends of various vaccum lines and see if I found water in them - not that I can explain how this would happen. While I had the spark plug wires out, I might see if I could detect water in the cylinders. As I got more perplexed I would change the oil and filter and look for water in the old oil. I might take off the valve cover gasket and look for water in the head. If you do this on the 4af or 4afe, notice the dabs of gasket compound that are placed around the ends of the cam shafts, you need to clean these off and replace it with new compound, or the head will get a minor oil leak at those places.

is different with 4AF/4AFEs as they don't have a valley. 4AGEs do and that's why the water gets in there when you wash them.
