91 corolla GT-S running cold?

Hello,

I just bought myself a 91 corolla GT-S with 257K kilometres on it. It was pretty cheap and in fairly good mechanical condition. There are a few things that seem to be wrong with it however and I was hoping someone here could answer some questions for me.

1) Sticky Gas Pedal - when I first start up the car, it feels as though the gas pedal is stuck and I have to press harder to "break" the stuckness. After it's "broken", it seems to be fine and I can feather the gas pedal again. What's wrong with it?

2) 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd Grinding - When I shift from first to second, there's some grinding of the gears. This doesn't happen on any other shift. Sometimes it doesn't happen. If I shift slowly from 1st to 2nd, it usually doesn't happen. But shifting down from 3rd, it almost always happens.

3) The temperature needle is quite low and never really gets passed 1/4 of the way. Is this something I should be concerned about? What's wrong with it and how do I fix it?

Thanks a bunch!

Lawrence

1. the car is idling high to warm up, the break problem.. are you breaking while still in gear?

2. sounds like your synchros are gone, you might need to rebuild but you're better off buying a new transmission(cheaper with so many JDM swaps going around for the RWD corollas)

3. temperature sounds fine, my 89 always stays around there after I got the rad replaced, the 90 goes a little higher almost to half temp but I think it might eventually need a flush and a new rad.

hope that helps a little.

dont drive a rolla, but i can answer your questions.
1, spray your throttle linkage with wd40, thatll help loosen it up
2. your sincros are goin out for second, i have the same prob, which was caused by a incompitent toyota mechanic abusing my car. doubble cluch when downshifting to second and youll stop the grinding.
3. thats not bad, if your concerned, get a higher temp thermostat. my celica gt-s sits at bout 1/4 all the time. i think it has a 170 thermostat, friends celi has a 180 and it sits bout 1/2 way up.
