turn to A-17 (Rear axle and suspension specifiations) in the Toyota FSM (I have the '83 manual for RWD, I had an '80 and '83 they had the same setup) and you will see that the TE also had the 6.38" rear, like the AE86 SR5.

Both manuals on my lap.

some '80-82 did come with the bigger rear, doesn't mean this one has it tho, can't make that assumption. Yes if you are fortunate enough to have one of those cars a zenki diff will work.

As far as will it work, here's a discussion on the topic;

http://www.toyota3tc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3126

kouki and zenki have different axles, that's common knowledge, that has no bearing tho on the discussion which was my point. Cause if you swap a full rearend brake to brake it doesn't matter which way he goes. Kouki is stronger tho in the long run.

You are confrontational, so you asked for it, if you don't want to argue then don't dispute other info., why would I lie about the price I paid for my parts, I try to help someone out and you step in and try to make me look like I don't know what I'm talking about and make it seem like my info. is misleading, I have no reason to lie to him. I am well known in the community and take pride in my knowledge and like to help others, call it an argument if you wish, I just want to make sure a forum member isn't mislead by false info.

Neil
First off I never said the SR5 AE86 didn't have a smaller rear end. I knew that it did because I took the one off my SR5 and there was a very noticable difference between the 6.7 and the 6.38. Also I accept that you are corrected. What I do not accept is the fact that you just said that basically both of us are correct. You said that some TE's came with the 6.7 and some didn't. That means both of us are correct. Also I am not calling you a liar or anything of that matter I can respect anyone that does there own work. Hell having a degree in automotive technology I love to see more people do there own work. What I was saying is it was kind of rediculus to pay that much for a new driveshaft when there are other options out there that are a lot cheaper and you went ahead and complained about the price although there are other options. Even having a driveshaft shipped to you from another junkyard would be cheaper then a brand new driveshaft. I am sorry if I came off as hating you as I respect you a lot. I think both of us just kind of got caught up in the moment and misread some of the things we were saying.

woody.. the bottom line is, since you're buying a 25 year old car, be ready to scrounge for parts and get involve as much as you can in a community like 3TC.com coz they'll be able to tell where to go get the parts you need. and please please please don't put 16's get some decent 14s or 15s anything over that is just not suited for a classic.

Neil.. i guess this topic brings back memories of the old wagon eh? and you're prolly still kicking yourself for not pickin' up TE you saw on the ditch. hehehehe!

it's funny how people would always bring up their "automotive degree!", when a discussion doesn't go on his way. i guess if you don't have a degree in automtive then what the hell would you know. forget the 20 something years of wrenching old toyotas.

Dude WTF is your problem I was trying to make peace with the guy and you come on here making me look like a total ass although I admitted I was wrong and made peace with teh guy.You know just because I mentioned I have an automotive degree doesn't mean I am sayinv I know more then anyone because I don't. I was arguing with him because from the info I had read I beleive I wsa right and I argue with what I beleive. Now that he has proven me sort of wrong I admit that. When I mentioned that I have an automotive degree I was stating that I am in the automotive field and that I do my own work and that I am respecting people that do there own work as well. I am saying that I don't like people that just pay people to do there work for them and what not. So buddy next time try not to be a copmlete asshole when I am trying to make peace with the guy I respect him and his knowledge and the fact that he proved me wrong just makes me respect him even more. Respect for you though is going way down though since you are trying to bring this arguement up again after I made my peace.

Ok I apologize man I thought I was be attacked indivudualy and I don't apprcieate that and I apologize. I do have respect for you for saying what you just said. I agree that a lot of peopel think jsut because they have an automotive degree they think they know more then people with years of experience. When I was going to school to get my degree I had a lot of people in the program argue with my dad who has sold toyota parts for 30 years and they would say that since he only has a high school diploma that he couldn't know unlike them who is pursuing a college degree in automotive. Well just about everytime my dad was correct about it. I think although I have a degree in automotive I have learned more from people that have had years of experience then people that learned from school and that is why I do have much respect for people with experience. I hope to one day be the guy in my area that people turn to for older toyota questions(I am getting there although there isn't much toyota people around my area). Once again though I do apologize.
