4afe......Where does the sensor wire go...........

From the exhaust manifold???

Is that an EGT??

02 sensor??

I hadn't noticed this the whole time I've been pokin' around in there, then I noticed today while putting in a new battery hold-down, that there's a wire coming out and it just ends right around the radiator overflow container.

I wonder why it hasn't registered a CEL????

Any help appreciated!

Probably the 02 sensor. Take a pic.

Shot in a dark garage so forgive me. Had to take a few & this is one came out the best. You can see that the wire just ends. I'd guess 02 sensor being in the exhaust manifold, but just wondering why I don't get a CEL since the wire's cut??

redgtxdi,
What year Corolla is this? Do you have an OEM manifold on it?

I don't have a 1995 to check so I all I can do is look in the 1996 service manual this evening. The autozone guide for the 1995 shows the back end of the O2 sensor on the 1995 facing the radiator, not the side of the car as in your picture.

I have seen aftermarket manifolds for my 90,91 where the side mounted sensor position and the "normal" O2 sensor positions are both present and the one on the side is plugged by bolts. So I was wondering if the 1995 uses the side mount position, or perhaps has some kind of sensor in each of the two positions.

Ya, I noticed that too. I think it's just 'cuz that's a carbureted one which would mean the picture is old. (Carbs were done away in the late 80's, no?) So I'd guess it's just a regular 4A-F, not a 4A-FE.

The '96 should be the same.........(though by Autozone's docs, it shows that '95 doesn't have a TPS?? It shows that only 4A-FE's in '96 & '97 have a TPS. Search me.)

All I know is that there are too many sensors and too many relays and crap. I can take an engine apart & slap it back together 'cuz I know cranks, cams, heads, valves, etc. etc. but I don't know JACK about all this electronic crap. Waaay too confusing!

Anything you find tonight would be much appreciated in case I have to hook that back up to pass smog.........(ya' know how they like to give you the "failed visual" bullcrap)

The 1996 Prizm service manual shows the position of the O2 sensor in the same place as the autozone page. The wiring information available is from a wiring diagram. All I can tell is that for the 1.6 L 4afe engine the sensor hs a blue wire and a white wire. The white wire is a ground and it connects a connector and exits it as a brown wire. The blue wire is connected to a junction and exits as a black wire to the "ECM"and enters it on pin C2-6. The ECM looks to be a component in the vicinity of the intake manifold side of the distributor. Maybe you need to drive around the Wallmart parking lot and introduce yourself to strangers. "Excuse me sir, but I can't help but noticing that you are driving a 1995 Prizm."

Could it be that you just have an unused O2 sensor stuck on the manifold and the real one is there also as shown on the autozone page?

Yup........you just nailed it on the the last sentence.

I stuck my head down in there after work & sure enough, I see a MUCH more intact 02 sensor with a nicely sleeved wire set coming out of it and somewhere under everything, but very much new looking nonetheless.

So I guess somebody (Toyota?) just sticks an 02 sensor in the side of the manifold and cuts the wire off????

Thanks for lookin', I really appreciate it!!!!
