Adjusting shift point on 4A-FE? Check out the PIC............

http://img285.imageshack.us/img285/526/img31276ol.jpg

OK, so forgive my auto-tranny ignorance, but I'm lookin' at the throttle wheel....(I'm calling it "wheel" for lack of a better term...LOL).........and notice that the bottom cable works in conjunction with the top cable.

I notice the bottom cable goes to the transmission and I'm assuming it works with how much your foot is "into" the pedal to decide when to shift.

Now, cruising in my Prizm, I'd love for it to stay in each gear a little longer without having to necessarily put my foot a little further into it. Soooooo...........I'm wondering if there's adjustment in this cable to allow me to accomplish this???

I slid the little cable boot over & noticed the cable is separate from tub, so perhaps adjusting that "double-nut" setup is not going to really do anything........

P.S. Also.......I assume the bottom there.....(where you see the "flying saucer" vacuum junction....LOL).....controls the idle speed. However, I notice when I bottom it out, I can even go beyond flat because that black rubber boot will give a bit. Why is that??????)

Can you tell me which way you moved yours???

I'm guessin' that if I move the double-nut further down the threaded portion (to the right in the pic) that it'll create more slack & cause shifting to happen later???

Bump!!!

I'm thinkin' about it more & I think moving nuts to the left (i.e. threaded portion to the right of the mount area) would take up more slack and make the cable more "tight"(taut?) and thus make the trans think I have my foot further into the throttle than I do and thus shift a bit later than normal.

????????

Especially necessary when the A/C is goin'. Power doesn't really start *coming on* 'til about 3,000rpm so when shifts are down around 2,000rpm ya' end up startin' the next gear a little behind the 8 ball.

Well, throttle body actually = the whole body.......(thus cleaning the TB, you wouldn't just clean the little wheel).........but I get the gist!!

The lower cable is your TV cable(Throttle Valve cable). It's more commonly reffered to as the kick-down cable or detent cable, whichever you prefer to call it. The upper is your throttle cable which need not be adjusted.

In order to get your tranny to shift later you'll need to draw that TV cable out farther by adjusting the two jam nuts. Don't pull it out too much, maybe one thread at most. Then go take it for a test run and floor it, see where it shifts. If you hit the rev limiter you adjusted it too far. You'll need to adjust it a few times to get it just right, and make sure the engine and tranny are at normal operating temperature otherwise it's shift points will change when it does reach temperature.

*edit* I'll make a diagram with your pic and post it up

You need to draw the cable out of the housing(blue arrow) by adjusting the jam nuts(green arrows) which pulls the housing away from the throttle body(red arrow).

Very cool!!! Thanks for the detail, Mike!!

Will definitely put it to the test! This engine's running so great right now. 'Bout the only thing it needs is just this little adjustment & it'll be quite the setup, for sure!!!

(Of course, it'd be nice if it had my Camry's 2.2L in it, but hey.... )
