I went to 2 toyota dealerships so far near my home area. I live in bergen county, NJ. I'm in the market for a 06 corolla ce automatic. No options or anything. Just a stripped down basic corolla for my gf's brother. The invoice price for the 06 corolla ce automatic with no options is $13,694. However the best any of the dealerships could do is $16,000 out the door after the taxes, fees, etc.
I was looking at the dealerships paper and there are so many ridiculous fees. Advertising fee, window etching fee, internet fee, some kind of tire fee, etc. etc. The tax and destination charges are all standard yes. However, I have a really hard time believing that all of these fees can add up to $995. WTF!!
I've bought 2 cars within the past e year myself: An Honda and Subaru and at both dealerships the fees were nowhere as rediculous as my experience at Toyota. At both the Honda and Subaru dealership, there was only a registration fee and documentary fee that equaled about 170 bucks. THAT'S IT!
I'm wondering are all of these fees true or are the dealers trying to rip me off. If they are indeed trying to rip me off, can someone point me in the right direction to a good dealership?? Thanks everyone.
That's why I hate shopping for a car in the U.S, I lived there for 10 years and bought 6 cars while I lived there. Tell you the truth, the best experience I had was when I bought my 94 camaro and 98 Merc 230. Bad experience when I bought the 96 Golf, 97 Neon, 99 CRV.The Honda dealer was trying to sell me carpets for $120!!!!!!! WTF? What you should do is to visit other dealerships or the best thing is to order a car with the trim that you want, but then you'll have to wait.
Get a honda, it's just as good if not better than the Toyota, and Honda has more aftermarket parts if you decide to spice up your ride.
I have owned both hondas and toyotas, don't get me wrong, I love toyotas, compare similar models, Corolla/Civic. Camry/Accord, I'd would say that the Hondas handles much better than Toyotas in terms of cornering and road feel, the Hondas just seem a little stiffer than the Toyotas. I must say tha Hondas are behind in terms of technology compared to Toyotas. They used the same old chassis and engine for the civic/accord/crv for the longest time until they decided to revamp. Toyota's ride could be compared to Mercedes, BMW much harsher ride than a similar model Merc. Compare a 3 series with the C series or the 5 series with the E series and you'll know what I'm talking about. And hondas has more aftermarket products than toyotas. Just like BMW has much more aftermarket products than Mercs.
Postscript, I think the most underrated jap brand is the Mazda, I love mazdas, not as soft handling as toyotas, not as harsh as hondas, just right!!!
I got my 2004 le brand new for $15200 . wich at the time the invoice was $15,400
they were selling the car for like $17900 . i ended up getting the upgraded alarm , full extended warranty (no plans on getting new car unless toyota puts out an awd wrx type car or new supra lol) and free oil changes for 3 years and tax came to about 17,000
so you are getting jipped .
go when they are just closing
our finanance guy was supposed to leave until we walked in right before closing lol .
he had to pick his daughter up from dancing lessons lol .
we kept trying to leave.
he got really upset and said fine here and gave us the deal. we were shocked and had to take it lol.
Just get a manual, you'll save that way. If you don't know how to drive manual learn.

Ehhh.........some people prefer automatic........(I, for one, do!)
I drove stick for so long that my first automatic car ('98 Camry) was such a dream, I just can't go back anymore.
Manual would be fun if I lived in Germany but since I live here in the U.S. (stop, go, stop, go........uphill.........downhilll......etc.etc.) I just can't say that manuals are the way to go anymore.
Biggest reason ---------------> Newer auto tranny's shift sooooooooo smoothly these days and soooooo INTELLIGENTLY anymore...........why bother w/ stick???
My '98 Camry shifts so well and so learned that it's as if it's doing what *I* would do if it *was* a stick. Plus, I can just let my left foot rest. I think the Corolla could use a weeeeee bit more refinement in the shifting, but I've only test driven a few so I can't say I have long-term experience with it. I just remember having to pay more attention to making it shift than my Camry. Perhaps it's a non-issue after ECU has learned one's driving style.
Manual........OK, if you reeeally need to save money..............otherwise.........Auto for pleasure!
If you really want the corolla deduct the fees you do not want to pay, subtract that from the drive out price they have quoted you, and take that new number and tell them that is how much you will pay for the car. IF they say they cant do it then leave and go somewhere else give them the same numbers and tell them if they can do it for that price you will buy a car. I dont know the sticker price of the new cars, but most likely they will call you in an hour or so and drop the ridiculous fees. That is what I did on a dodge truck I had. I went to another dealer after the first one and the salesman was willing to come off the price more when I told him I was at another dealer. Good Luck!!!
Man that's a crap load of fees. Man makes it sound like a used car dealer. Ask them to drop the fees, if they don't just leave. The only extra charges should be tax, title, licence and delivery.
